Part of that inspiration, I believe, comes from the film 'The Hidden Fortress' which is told from the point of view of the two bumbling peasants/losers who ARE Artoo and Threepio. Actually SW is *incredibly* derivitive of 'Hidden Fortress' but in a good way- go watch the two back-to-back and see what what I mean.
That said, the WAY that GL went about including the droids is mostly, IMHO, crap. Not even getting into Artoo's 'enhanced' abilities either. I can see no reason at all that Threepio should have been built by Anakin nor why Artoo should have been the property of Anakin. The droids could and should have been included, but more in the background and not as part of the main action.
Just my 2 cents.
The Hidden Fortress, the force is strong with this one! The more people dig the more GL's "vision", isn't quite what it seems.
