People that have a problem w/the Droids in PT

I’ve heard alot of people complain that Lucas just threw them in there to appease the fans and to try to tie the two trilogies together. However, I was reading through the Making of… book for ROTS and came upon something I had forgotten.

R2D2 has to be in every film, atleast, to maintain George Lucas’s original vision. The Journal of the Whills is the story recorded by The Whills as R2D2 tells it to him, hundreds of years later. The opening title card, “A long time ago…” is basically R2D2 starting the story. I know the whole ‘recounting’ of the story idea was dropped, but having R2 in all the films seems alittle more thought out than just throwing him in their for little to no reason.

So can we agree that gripe is bunk, or not?

I'll agree in *part*, Hardcore. As far back as I can remember (being 34 now) Lucas had in mind that the droids be the glue that held the trilogies together. Part of that inspiration, I believe, comes from the film 'The Hidden Fortress' which is told from the point of view of the two bumbling peasants/losers who ARE Artoo and Threepio. Actually SW is *incredibly* derivitive of 'Hidden Fortress' but in a good way- go watch the two back-to-back and see what what I mean.

That said, the WAY that GL went about including the droids is mostly, IMHO, crap. Not even getting into Artoo's 'enhanced' abilities either. I can see no reason at all that Threepio should have been built by Anakin nor why Artoo should have been the property of Anakin. The droids could and should have been included, but more in the background and not as part of the main action.

Just my 2 cents.

I have no problem with R2 in the PT, just Threepio. They way he was introduced was dumb, and his whole character was just... useless to the PT.

Well for that matter Threepio was useless in the OT as well- just comic relief... but 1000% better than Jar-Jar!

I couldn't say it could be considered "bunk" now, for the sole purpose that Lucas never made use of that story device. I agree with greencapt, though. I've always thought that if the droids had to be in the prequels, they should be in the background and have no relation to the main characters (of the prequels) at all. They could just happen to be on a planet as a battle relative to the main story is going on, and there could be a scene where they wonder what in the world is happening. And if you want to take it farther, have them get mixed up in it from behind the scenes. Through their own bumbling (not with super duper magical rocket jets and whatnot), they do something that just happens to save the day for the good guys, while the good guys don't know how they were saved, and the droids have no idea they did anything at all. That would have been an interesting way to include them, through indirect contact, rather than them always just happening to be in the center of the action throughout every important event in the galaxy. And Anakin building 3PO... just crap. Any other explanation would have been better. "I built him to help out Mom." What the hell? Why would a slave woman need a protocol droid? Does she really expect to come into contact with people who can speak 6 million languages?

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

But Gaffer.... little Annie (god I hate that nickname!) just said Threepio was there to 'help' mom... not to translate...

no father... no man around... to 'help' mom...

Remember that old Threepio trading card?

Ah, of course. If there had been an Episode 0, it would have been highlighting Anakin's original dream. He didn't want to be a Jedi! He wanted to be a droid pimp! Before he went public, he wanted to test his first creation on his mother! Oh, why, why, George, do you always cut out the best story ideas?

roflmao...thats hilarious.

greencapt, I totally agree that the nickname Annie is terrible. I always cringe when i hear that. Especially in Episode II and III after he's older. Its like, 'and you wonder why he turned to the dark side...you constantly refered to him by a girls name, what did you expect'.

Why Anakin really turned to the dark side:
"Anakin, You're father I am" - Yoda
"No. No. That's not true! That's impossible!" - Anakin

And even more sad is the fact that, in the scripts, Lucas writes it as 'Annie' and not as 'Ani'!! WTF????

Then again... he WAS basically a little orphan...

"Jar Jar was perhaps the most risky characters of all - not only because he would be entirely computer generated, but because he was the first truly comedic character ever to inhabit a Star Wars movie. "George told me that we were going out on a limb," [Ahmed] Best recalled. "See-Threepio was funny, but in a very formal way. And Chewbacca got some laughs, but he was basically just a big bouncer for the Millenium Falcon. Jar Jar was the first outright comic character." - Making of Episode One

Sorry, but they are worlds apart in concept. Lucas even admits as much.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Don't get me wrong MBJ- I love Threepio. And that's as comedic as the series should have ever been! Much of that was adult humor (not like *that* folks- you know what I mean) instead of poop and fart jokes.

And plus- if it weren't for Threepio then which character would have been there to point out obvious plot points??

The Hidden Fortress, the force is strong with this one! The more people dig the more GL's "vision", isn't quite what it seems.
"Drink the Kool-Aid. Wear blinders. Cover your ears. Because that's the only way you can totally enjoy Revenge of the Sith -- the final and most futile attempt from skilled producer, clumsy director and tin-eared writer George Lucas to create a prequel trilogy to match the myth-making spirit of the original Star Wars saga he unleashed twenty-eight years ago. Fan boys, of course, have convinced themselves otherwise. So have several critics, if you go by early reviews."
