So when you’re banned, you’re automatically logged out immediately even if you’re, for example, in the process of writing a farewell post, or does it just not let you back in if you try to navigate elsewhere, or what?

I imagine it revokes your login credentials for even that session.

Not sure as I’ve never been banned.

You could try banning yourself and see what happens. 😉

I think I’ve been able to deduce how it works.

There’s a file, request.js, that I assume is invoked every time you visit a page. If the status ban is true for a user, it requires reauthentication. That brings you to /models/user.js, wherein if that user shows as being in the Banned Users category in the authentication process, the login operation fails and emits the message “This account has had its login privileges revoked.” Users are added to the Banned Users category with the ban function.

I assume that login access is revoked even for your current session, because if it wasn’t, you could just keep your browser window going and keep on posting.

JEDIT: Er, it might just be that authentication is required when you’re trying to ban a user. If so, that makes my theory invalid.

Best not to speculate too much further on that.

And I can’t ban myself. No little red button appears for me.

Well, I’m hopeful for a Frink more similar to the good ol’ days. We ought to be able to let one another know if we have a problem with something another party has said in gentle, civil manner, at least as a first response. Frink has a reputation for gunning it from 0 to 60 and stifles discussion. To be honest, I’ve often refrained from posting in threads, usually posted by the uninitiated, about topics outside of his liking, just to avoid having more BS to put up with.
He’s a fun, endearing gatekeeper, and I like having him around. But he shouldn’t have such free reign to crap all over differing opinions.

If I had the mad scientist capabilities he himself possesses, I’d probably set the Frink-o-meter to about 33%.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Same, I love Frink as well but recently he just became a bit more aggressive towards others who disagreed with him on something as stupid as movies.

EDIT: Wrong wording there. Movies are one of my favorite things but it is stupid to get in heated name calling over them.

Gaffer! Glad to see you! Yeah, Frink got banned but it is only temporary. Things have gotten more strict since the last time you were here.

I agree. There are topics (besides the obvious one) that I no longer mention because I do not wish to invite ridicule. And it would be my hope that people could talk about opinions or interests without worrying about getting jumped.

Frink didn’t get heated because he disagreed about the movie. It was because of the offensive word used.

I don’t think anyone is, or should be, begrudging him for taking offense. To play devil’s advocate, the problem is that at this point in time a lot of people simply don’t view the use of the word “retarded” in any form as inherently offensive. It’s just a fact. It isn’t seen in the same light as the n-word. A lot of this depends on culture or upbringing and stuff like that. I had no idea that anybody found it so offensive that it should be designated the “r-word” until a year or two ago. I just didn’t know. Immediately attacking someone for using it, especially when not as an insult to any real person, is an unfair response I think. I haven’t read everything in the thread or the aftermath because I want to avoid as many specific TLJ spoilers as I can for now so I may not have gotten the full gist of the problem so I probably just shut the hell up and go back to lurking for a couple more days. Anyways, I really hate to see Frink banned over this since I love him so much.

I wasn’t talking about that instance. I’m talking about how every time a person ranks ROTS too high for Frink’s liking, he had to berate them for it. I like Frink, but like Hal, think sometimes he goes too far. I am not talking specifically about that situation.

I have to disagree here. It was not about people not liking the movie, it was about people saying “where are all the attractive women in this movie”, “that fat asian chick” and of course the r-word. If you don’t like the movie, fine. If you don’t like the movie because you think “women don’t belong in Star Wars” or “Disney has an anti-male agenda”, then it’s a problem. And disagreeing with the way some Star Wars fans here talk about women is more than just disagreeing about a stupid movie.

Now, if moderators can’t monitor a spoiler thread, that’s also a problem. I fully understand that Jay and the mods have a life outside of this forum, but saying “here’s a spoiler thread, but remember to play nice, because the mods don’t want to read this” is just asking for trolls and it creates an obstacle to report posts, as noone wants to be the one that ruins the movie for the mods. At least the registration should have been closed one day ahead of the release to keep out the trolls and socks.

But that’s not a bannable offense, so it shouldn’t play any role in his current ban.
