Jay has said more bans are likely as he reviews the thread. And he hasn’t even seen the movie yet so he’s spoiling himself in the process.

I hope the person who used that word is a part of those bannings.

It wasn’t willfully offensive, though. He just used R in lieu of, say, the word idiot.

But is it really acceptable to do that? The more I think about it, the more I think the term just shouldn’t be used at all.

People over there are all comparing the r-word to the n-word—while I understand the need to try not to be offensive, the r-word is not omgwhattheheckdidyoujustsay levels of offensive that’s worthy of instaban—despite it hitting a sensitive chord for some people.

Did the guy even get a warning for using the r-word?

He should watch it first then. This is his site, so he should have already watched it.

Besides, if he can’t ban the person the used the r-word, because he hasn’t read the thread because he hasn’t seen TLJ, then how can be ban Frink? Someone with banning power must have Frinks post.

I think it was Jason or Wook.

Jay made the post explaining the ban.

Yeah I know. I’m not sure how the reporting system works, is what I’m saying I guess. I assume someone reported a post, and Jay read it, or another mod read it and reported it to Jay, or whatever. I don’t know.

At a basic level, these words are just words. The things that makes them epithets is how people react to them. If people react to the r-word as much as the n-word, they should be treated the same.

People are busy, y’know.

People can make time for things.

He shouldn’t have to see it right away to not be spoiled. That’s not fair.

He should just delegate cleaning up the mess to his mods that have seen the film.

I think it was Jason or Wook. Jay did post in the thread, but that doesn’t mean he read more than the post that was reported.

responsible modding dictates that you read all posts involved, not just the post that was reported. If whoever banned Frink has seen TLJ, they can go in and read the rest of the posts as well and respond to the use of the r-word.

Jay is the admin of a Star Wars forum. That kind of means he should seen new Star Wars movies in a timely manner.

Contrary to popular belief, we have lives. They often take a backseat to the needs of this site too much already. I bought tickets for an entire group last week so I could catch a Thursday night screening, but that was out of a desire not to get the movie spoiled for me like last time.
Things got more complex this time out, with at least one member here apparently catching an early press screening days before the premiere and posting a detailed review about it.

As Jay pays for this forum out of his own pocket, (we haven’t even had advertising in years) he doesn’t owe you guys a darn thing.

Where were you in '77?

Do they? I’m not saying Frink, I’m saying people. I guess I don’t interact with enough people to know whether it generally an unacceptable epithet to most people now. I know it’s unacceptable here, because people here said it was. But in general is it really on that level of just being a downright nasty epithet?

Like, just in a general, in real life, if something happened that one feels is unjustified and one shows one’s displeasure by saying “that’s retarded.” Is that an epithet?

I’m not saying it’s not. And I’m not saying I use it. I’m saying it didn’t used to be a big deal, and last I remember someone complaining about it (where I heard them complain) that wasn’t here it maybe still wasn’t as big a deal as it again has become.

I didn’t say that. I meant he runs a Star Wars forum and therefore it would behoove him to watch a Star Wars film before the site inevitably spoils it for him.

Ok, if I am understanding things correctly, someone described a character in TLJ by using the r-word. It of course pissed off Frink and he responded using the f-word and other things and got temp banned for it. Did the person using the r-word get banned or disciplined at all?

No, and that’s what I think is the real injustice.

They only said it once. And they did get warned that it’s not acceptable.

How many times they said shouldn’t matter. The point is, the rules say that any use of slurs results in an “immediate and permanent ban with no prior warning.” Jay should at least apply his rules equally.

I agree, but here is the problem: what constitutes a slur in terms of Jays rules? Obviously people can not read Jay’s mind and know he thinks is and is not a slur. It is possible Jay does not think the r-word is a slur.

I don’t understand why it really matters how it was taken in the past. The thing is that we’re talking about. A thing that happened now, December 2017. The past shouldn’t really matter in that conversation.

Yes, so I think Jay should tell us what counts as a slur, and we can go from there.

It matters because this is a discussion board and language changes over time. The severity of the epithet changes over time, it seems. I was unaware of it being so severe as to warrant an immediate, no-warning instaban.

And I’m not saying it’s not. I’m saying I didn’t know it was. And am not sure when it became so because it didn’t used to be.

This isn’t a matter of owing anyone anything. This is a matter of him being the sole admin of a Star Wars forum. That kind of dictates that he should see TLJ in a timely manner.

Yes, because the other guy didn’t get banned yet. So apparently is can still be up for debate whether it warrants one. That probably won’t change the mods’ minds, but I can still talk about whether whatever action they might or might not take that they haven’t taken yet migth be appropriate.

Just to clarify, I was talking about the status of the word not the status of that member.

I assume nothing. I know he owns this site. I know it will spoil him quickly if he lets it. I know if he doesn’t want to be spoiled he ought to watch the film before it does. Obligations or no.

If he wants to not be spoiled before reading the spoiler thread, he should watch the film before reading the spoiler thread.
