I've been dreaming about quality dvd's of the original star wars trilogy for years and years now, and let me add my voice to the masses when I say that my dreams came true once I discovered this project. The work you guys are doing is truely amazing, and you will definately be recieving some donations (ableit minor compared to what I'm sure you've put in) in the near future. I believe I speak for all star wars fans out there when I say "May the force be with you".

Did they mention if they want to do a anamorphic or a letterboxed set?
I would prefer a letterboxed set, becaue resizing lowers the picture quality, and the anamorphic version really has no benefit in the case of a laserdisc source.

I think it should be pronounced anime/video game style. Exty is so much easier to say than Ex-zero and no ambiguous Oh!

...Or maybe not.

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.
Everything is better on a laserdisc. Whatever happened to the laserdisc? Laserdisc!

Not such a dumb kid after all, are you?

Whoa! You can see Mark Hamill's Dirty Sanchez in that new pic!

The detail is just a little too good. ;-)

No, it's true, the pictures you have on the site are absolutely amazing. I want these DVDs NOW! Ahhh!

Keep up the good work.

Looking good, despite Hamills 'tash - does that mean Luke is the elusive Gringo?

The TR47 images seems to have a little more picture information at the top and bottom. Is this a difference in source material or capture method, or just a bit of overcropping when making the stills?

I was asking a specific question and not reopening an anamorphic vs letterboxed discussion.

I think he was just trying to make sure it didn't go off in that direction.

There will definitely be a letterboxed widescreen transfer. Whether or not there will be an anamorphic depends mostly on how could it can be made to look, and demand.

Actually, you asked a specific question, and then went some way down the road to reopening the anamorphic vs letterboxed discussion by adding some editorial commentary, which was covered in the thread dumb_kid referred to.

With luck, one of the X0 Project team members will write a detailed anamorphic vs. letterboxed report for the website...?

Just to recall what S7en had mentioned which I found interesting: Why *does* the TR47 bootleg have more picture information?

Personally, the information lost is not a whole lot and doesn't bother me (especially when you take into account more determining factors like noise and sharpness). But I'm sure that it may undermine the x0 project's philosophy which is to preserve as much as possible the original trilogy.

(BTW: I'm not dissing the x0 project in any form or manner, but merely giving a little helpful criticism)

I didn't do the capture, so I can't say for sure. But I do know from my own experience that different capture cards clip the video in different places. I found a hack for my card that let me adjust it manually, but most cards can't do this. Looking at the difference between the two though, I'd say it's not much of an issue.

You're looking at the rope!? Look at the detail on the gold bikini!

-iRantanplan : my comment wasn't directed towards you in anyway... it was just to avoid any new derailment of the topic. Sometimes we jump into a side discussion too easily... kind of like a cat when you put something shiny in its face.... speaking of shiny did you see that gold bikini!!!

Unless I'm missing something, it can't be a capture issue as the info missing is from the top & bottom and this is a letterboxed source.

rnanimal, you are correct - unless the video was cropped during the capture. I've done this on some projects to save space for the capture file.

That being said, I believe the capture file I received from Laserman was fullscreen, IIRC. Didn't TR47 use the Def.Col. for his transfers?

Would that mean that the Faces set is slightly more cropped on the LD source than the DefCol?

If anyone can post a comparison screencap of the official DVD "Luke's tache" frame, that would be good.
Author

It cracks me up that we're calling it the "Luke's tache" picture.

But in all seriousness, did anyone notice this until it was pointed out? I know I didn't! I personally don't think it's that big of a deal. At least it's not Pan and Scan, badly overscaned on an old television (the way most of us even remember watching these films in the first place).

I wonder if the widescreen Faces VHS set would be a good enough indicator about the cropping. I have that and the DC Laserdisc set, but I do not have the Faces LD's.

Theoretically, the faces LD and VHS would have come from the same master, so you should be able to tell. Take a look and let us know.

This is a screencap I made from my old project. You can see why I need to redo it. Anyway, this is from the DC Laserdisc. I hope the grab matches the correct frame. Mine looks terrible now compared to a lot of the other projects. Mine is 16:9. I had a lot of dot crawl because I used S-Video instead of composite.
