Anyone got the Laserdisc audio for The Wrong Trousers? I've never heard the original audio it seems--even my VHS copy had "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow"--I just found out about the issue via this thread, and now I'm quite curious.  I've got the Blu-ray video (US edition--slight speed FPS issue?).

PM me and I'll see what I can do.  It's my favorite Wallace & Gromit.

Of course Miami Vice was shot on film. Like all other filmed TV shows of the time, it was shot on 35mm, at 4:3 Academy ratio, protected for the "TV safe area." The only picture that is missing is info on all four sides that the viewer was never intended to see. (This was an issue when Star Trek: The Next Generation was scanned in HD for Blu-ray - there were shots that exposed equipment on the periphery, which was outside the "safe area" and never meant to be seen, and which had to be zoomed in to match the framing in the original aired versions. There were a couple times where they forgot to do this - the redshirt getting frozen by Q in "Encounter at Farpoint" exposes the blast coming from an air jet below frame.)

Also, an important point: Anything shot on 35mm film, that is not anamorphic or VistaVision, is 4:3. Widescreen is achieved by cropping off the top and bottom - this is/was usually done by the projectionist at the theater.

Some directors have shot films "hard-matted", placing a physical 1.66:1 - 1.85:1 matte box in front of the camera lens - the end result is a regular-sized film frame with black space at the top and bottom and a "widescreen" image in the middle. This is how James Cameron shot The Terminator and Aliens, and how Steven Spielberg shot E.T.

But TV shows were always shot in 4:3 with the intent of being shown in 4:3. IIRC, Babylon 5 was the first TV show to be shot protected for 16:9 (in anticipation of future HDTV broadcasts - B5 fans already know how this got screwed up and why we will probably never actually see the show in HD as was originally planned)

I think one of the really sad ones is Northern Exposure.

Some really interesting music was unapologetically replaced.  Be nice to see that restored some how.

Amen. There is a fellow in Canada who sold DVD-r captures containing full music. It was apparently syndicated on his local tv long ago without any edits. The disc set was priced @ $150 last time I hunted him down. I was hoping they would have been liberated by now, but no-go.:(

I am actually working my way through Northern Exposure now. I have a set of tvrips with original music but the video quality is so bad it makes me sad :(

They are taken from UK tv so it's not a rip of the Canadian guys set.

Would also like to see it 'liberated'.

Of course combining the "good" audio from the rips with the good video from the DVDs would fix that.

So I just got season 1 of ALF. I guess all of the US versions are cut. I hear in Germany MOST of the episodes are uncut. Anyone know of a source which has comparisions between the cut syndicated US version and the tv versions and German versions? I'd be willing to give this a shot as correcting these as well

Was there ever a custom made of this? My old VHS had the original audio. The replaced music has always bugged me.

I kind of doubt anyone but me is interested in this, but Fist of Fun series 2 on DVD had some cuts made to it. Apparently, the BBC is squeamish about jokes about the royal family for some reason. I would love to see the broadcast versions of the cut episodes.

There's an episode of Quantum Leap where access to the overscan zone exposes nip slip :o

The same clip is shown in the series opener though and they are not visible.

Are there any Duckman fans who know exactly how the 90s animation Duckman fared on the 2008-9 DVD releases? What was the severity of the music or syndication cuts in those sets?

Thank you but no review I've found has gone into enough detail about the music cuts. The first season is screening on Australian TV again for the first time in over a decade, possibly uncut. I don't own the DVDs to compare but if a preservation would be valuable to Duckman fans I'd look into it.

FYI:

  • Northern Exposure DVD sets with the original music intact was released in Germany. It’s available on amazon.de as “Ausgerechnet Alaska - Die komplette Serie (28 Discs)”. It is in PAL, so expect speed up, but reportedly sound is pitch-corrected.

I don’t have it, but was about to buy it until I read that

  • http://www.fabulousfilms.com is reportedly releasing a Blurray version (2018) with original music intact. Again, it’ll be PAL, and region locked to B.

I pulled all this info from the great thread on br.com http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=246694

Bonanza and the Beverly hilbillies had their theme song completely replaced on some dvd releases, not sure if all of the releases are altered, apparently they were to cheap to license the theme songs, music rights suck.

Don’t laugh when I say this: “The Golden Girls”.

While seasons 1, 2, 4,6,7 were unedited for the DVDs, the DVD box sets for seasons 3 and 5 were edited to hell and were the syndicated episodes. I’m unsure if the ones on HULU are uncut for seasons 3 and 5 and I highly doubt Buena Vista (Disney) would even care for this series at all to restore them to its uncut/non-syndicated glory.

“Roseanne” is another one. Everything’s uncut, save for the Patty Duke Show homage with Lecy Goranson and Sarah Chalke playing the two Beckys is removed from the DVDs. I’m sure I’ve missed a few syndicated cuts and other cuts here and there, but that’s the one I remember.

I guess no one mentioned Wonder Years. I freaking love this show and it took ages to be released on DVD due to the music licensing matter.
Throughout the whole series, only 14 songs have been replaced on DVD (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Wonder-Years-The-Complete-Series/20182) but we’re still lacking those.
However, if I recall correctly, Netflix had all the episodes with the intact broadcast audio with the exception of the opening credits, as they replaced With a Little Help From My Friends with a cover by an unknown artist.
Of course, the DVDs are much better than those old TV-Rips floating around, but have anyone tried to restore those 13 episodes?
