Regarding the Dune film discovery: There are some important points to ponder when considering if dylanfree saw the Smithee version versus some long lost Lynch cut. First and foremost is that the Smithee version was intended for network broadcast as a TV miniseries. It might not have ever been edited together as film to only be transfered to tape for broadcast. It wouldn't be unreasonable to suspect that it was edited in some other format.
And more importantly there has never been (to my knowledge) a theatrical aspect ratio of the Smithee, it was strictly pan and scan. This is why all video/DVD releases and broadcasts of it have ALWAY been pan and scan. If dylanfree saw Smithee in widescreen, that would have been a major find as well.
There's been more cuts of the Bladerunner than I care to think about, but I'm suspecting the whisking away of that Dune film is a sad loss...
My gut says his boss didn't turn it in to anyone. It's either in his private collection or being readied for eBay.
