@sledgeweb:
I don't have News Gothic at the moment, sorry I can't help - if I manage to find it I will upload and link you to the files.

@wannabegeorge:
Do you have "Baucher Gothic URW T Alternates"?
Also, if you're talking about the same thing I'm thinking when you say "movie credits" on the back, then it should be "Univers" font. It's actually one of the condensed types of Univers, can't remember which right now.

No problemo. What do you mean by movie credits on the back? Do you mean the back of the DVD cover? If so, that's Albertus MT.

Anyone know what font was used for the old school ROTJ logo?

Times New Roman.

I'd say it looks more like Garamond Bold, which even has the same dropped J, and is slightly fancier than TNR.

Hi! I was wondering if a more knowledgeable person could shed some light on the following:

1. What font was used for the subtitles in the theatrical prints of Episode I?
2. What font was used for the subtitles in the theatrical prints of Episode II?
3. What font was used for the subtitles in the original version of SW?
4. What font was used for the subtitles in the original version of ROTJ?
5. What font was used for the subtitles in later VHS and laserdisc releases of the SW trilogy?
6. What font was used for the DVD subtitles for any of the movies?
7. What fonts were used for the ending credits of the SW movies? Were the classic trilogy end credit fonts different from the prequels?
8. What font was used for the original green Lucasfilm logo at the beginning of each film in the trilogy?

Thanks ahead of time for enlightening me on this.

Well, we know exactly what was used for Episode I, it was ITC Franklin Gothic Demi Bold, 69 point with -30 tracking (though I have no idea why the official site told us the point size, as that doesn't really help much at all). It was used because it supposedly matched the OT, though I believe there is some debate as to whether or not it is an exact match. I doubt anything different was used for Episode II, but I can't remember what they looked like anyway.

I'm definitely not close to being an expert, but I presumed the DVD subtitles were just defined by the DVD player as my DVDs vary based on where I play them, on the computer they look woeful.

And as for the laserdisc subtitles, according to Darth Editous...

The best match for me was AlternateGotNo3D, 42pt, 70% width, -25 on the tracking (except where characters came too close together), and with doubled spaces. For NTSC you'll need to change the height to 83%. Then I added a 1px black Inner Glow (50% opacity) and a 1px black Outer glow (100% opacity).

[edit]Lovely grammar![/edit]

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.
Everything is better on a laserdisc. Whatever happened to the laserdisc? Laserdisc!

Yup, I found AlternateGotNo3D was much closer than Franklin (I was trying to match the subs on the SE LDs). Franklin has round Os whereas Got has the straight-sided Os, like in the A NEW HOPE part of the crawl (I've since discovered that the crawl font is Univers, but GotNo3D is still a better match for the subs). Impact was also fairly close, and has the advantage that it comes with Windows.

I'm definitely not close to being an expert, but I presumed the DVD subtitles were just defined by the DVD player as my DVDs vary based on where I play them, on the computer they look woeful.

Subtitle streams are encoded as a series of stills, so they should look the same whatever you play them on. The most interesting use of subtitles is on the Ghostbusters commentary - enabling them puts an animated shadow of the commentators on top of the movie, a bit like MST3K.

Great- thanks. So most questions are answered:

So all of the theatrical versions of all films in the saga sported subtitles in ITC Franklin Gothic Demi Bold.

Actually, I believe that on disc 2 of AOTC (when the deleted scenes are being discussed), there are clips of the original version of AOTC- with the original subtitles. I'll have to check.

What font was used for the subtitles in later VHS and laserdisc releases of the SW trilogy?

AlternateGotNo3D and Impact come pretty close, but no exact match.

So I only have a few remaining questions:

1. What fonts were used for the ending credits of the SW movies? Were the classic trilogy end credit fonts different from the prequels?

2. What font was used for the original version of "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away" (not prequels, because it was done incorrectly)

3. Do all subtitles in the saga fade in and fade out as they do in the prequels? How long is the fade-in and fade-out?

Thanks for your help!
