I don’t really expect one. I don’t think it’s on anyone’s radar.
It’s been a while since we’ve gotten another one of those good old fashioned rumors, so no, it’s not on anyone’s radar right now.
But I stand by my argument that being able to watch the SE in 4k with HDR will simply not be a big enough selling point for many people. I don’t think it’s a generalization to say that a sizable percentage of the fans (both hardcore and casual) are tired of those versions and would vastly prefer to watch the unaltered OT, warts and all. Even if the average person who might prefer the OUT doesn’t know how to get their hands on de-specialized, they’re also not going to want to part with their money yet again if Lucasfilm is only putting out the SE “but in 4k w/ HDR this time!!!” Many fans would likely reply “thanks, but I’m good with my 2011 blu-rays if that’s the only upgrade you’re offering.”
Considering the fact that only so many people will bother upgrading their equipment to 4k, simply being able to watch newer transfers of the SE on regular blu-ray won’t be of much interest. Lucasfilm will need to offer something major on the content side for those sticking with 1080p.
I sincerely hope that you’re right, but god dammit, when?!
If this Fox buyout actually goes through, maybe a whole lot sooner than we’d thought.
God willing, but I’m not getting my hopes up.
If memory serves, the stuff everyone was looking forward to about the blu-ray bonus discs (deleted scenes, vintage docs) were very OT-centric, and this is back when George was still in charge!
That’s partly because the special features for the PT in the Complete Saga set are horrible. There is so many good features in the DVD releases it’s a damn shame they didn’t bring them over for the BD.
There is a special place in hell for people who don’t archive extras and make fans double-dip.
At that point, why not just have a box set of I-VIII with a spot reserved for IX?
Other than “because by that point many fans will probably already have bought TFA and TLJ”?
Not to mention the slippery slope of “do they stick to the main saga or do they throw in Rogue One and Han Solo as well?”
If the remaster is done correctly, I’d pay damn-near any price for the OUT, even if it’s in a big giant boxed set of other stuff.
I used to feel this way, but they let that boat sail.
I’m not buying even one more movie to get the three I want.
I still feel this way, and I’m fairly sure that if we’re lucky enough to get the OUT, then at best, we’ll be getting it in a giant set that’s overpriced as an extra. The thought of getting it on it’s own for a good price seems like a pie-in-the-sky dream.

I have a sincere, doubtful suspicion whether the studio would put anywhere near the quality of effort into a restoration as Harmy (and co.) has. I do want an OUT Remaster, especially since I can then legitimately prefer an existing HD OUT without being labelled “nerdy” or “purist”, but I don’t think it will hold a candle to Despecialized. There was just so much painstaking attention to detail put in.
In other words, I have to figure out how to get my Blu-ray burner working 😉. In all seriousness, what Harmy has accomplished is pretty amazing, but frankly, Disney would have access to the original master materials and industry professional technology.
You’re kidding, right? Despecialized is amazing and we are all grateful to Harmy, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a color corrected 1080p transfer interlaced with shots from laser disc and minimally restored 35mm.
Yeah, I mean what Harmy has accomplished pretty damned amazing, but like I said, Disney would have access to professional restoration equipment and billions of dollars of technology, not to mention prints, original elements, etc.
Please! Expect complete silence regarding the originals for the foreseeable future. It’s the only way to remain sane. I allowed myself to get my hope up for the 40th at Celebration for no reason at all. As soon as George walked out I knew it wasn’t going to happen.
I’m with you on this. Not getting my hopes up on an OT release all over again. The 40th was the time to do it, or to at least acknowledge it as a thing.
The surprise John Williams concert was nice though.
After getting burned as badly as I did by the GOUT announcement, I’ve learned to not get my hopes up about any of the OUT news anymore. I’ve just sort of resigned myself that the chances are slim and none.
