The DC Extended Universe — Page 5

What did people think about JL? I thought it was a much better film than MoS or BvS and it was great to see actual colors and people smiling in these films. Sure, the plot was ice-thin and the villain was horrendous but it was a fun time and not too long, either. I really enjoyed the cast, except for Cyborg who just was there. Not a great film but a positive surprise since I absolutely hate MoS and while BvS had its couple of moments it’s overly long, boring and annoying.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

I saw it with the fam this past Monday. I felt that the last half of the film was really good, in spite of the weak villain. The first half could have been better with less exposition—yet another scene with Barry and his dad?!? For instance, without the individual films to set up everything, a la MCU, the first part of the movie felt pretty clunky to me. Like MoS and BvS before it, JL could have been so much more and I feel that once the inevitable extended edition comes out, there will be plenty of fodder for fan editors to create a better overall film.

I liked the color pallet of the film as well. I also like the team chemistry between the actors and felt that Whedon’s influence was fairly obvious in some spots, but not negatively so. I still don’t like Cyborg’s inclusion on the team; he has always been a Teen Titan, so for me as a long time DC fan, his role on the JL does not do it for me. I thought the actor did a great job, but I would have preferred John Stewart’s GL, by far.

My last point is about Warner’s consistent and incessant micro managing of its properties. The powers that be at WB, like most big studios, have ruined property after property and for some reason, still refuse to allow creators to create so instead of seeing a creator’s true vision, we are left with muddled, boring and/or poorly edited ‘could have been better’ movies that consistently fall short of the competition. Fox, Sony and others have been guilty of the same thing, but WB has taken this practice to a new art form. Which is tragic when you consider the depth of talent out there and the toy box of comic properties they could potentially be hitting home runs with…

I thought it was mediocre at best. I’m glad it wasn’t gratingly pretentious like some other DC efforts of late, but it was just… empty. I felt nothing. I didn’t care about any of the characters or their predicaments, I didn’t care about anything. I also thought it was ugly. I don’t understand praise for it’s “color” because it was just a dreary hodgepodge. Then again, I guess us DC fans have been so starved for quality lately that many took this piece of stale bread and praised it as a feast.

Anyway, if you’d have told past me growing up on the JL cartoons of the 2000s that a real, big-budget, live action film would be released and it wouldn’t automatically be my favorite movie of all time, I wouldn’t have believed you, but here we are. I can forgive a lot in DC movies as long as I feel something (see: Wonder Woman), but Justice League was emotionally hollow for me.

I’m glad some people seem to enjoy it, but I felt nothing.

I think whoever is in charge of these movies should be shot. Not using the Batman for TDK trilogy and instead using Aflack Batman that didn’t have any movie on his own first? Combining SvA with the Doomsday story line, throwing Wonderwoman in there too? Doing the JL movie right after Doomsday, so you have a JL without Superman? Also no Green Lantern in the JL? Yes his movie sucked, but the Green Lantern’s absence from the JL is glaring. Of course whose fault is it that G L movie sucked? The same people in charge of these movies. The costumes look dumb to boot. The animated DC universe was done much, much better.

Another thing about B v S: why were they fighting? They are supposed to be on the same side! Also if I am not mistaken, in B v S, Batman blames Superman for all the destruction that occurred in Man of Steel. There is just one problem with that: it is not Superman’s fault. Zod is responsible for all the destruction.

While it was a more fun flick, I didn’t mean I enjoyed it as “a film”. I just thought it was miles better than the previous Superman films, which isn’t hard. But it’s not even close to WW. I think my post made it look like an actual good movie which it isn’t. Just saying that at least and at last there was something positive that you could sit it through and enjoy your time somewhat. Sure, it didn’t make me feel anything and I don’t even remember much of it even though I only saw it last week, but still.

If I’d give a 1-10 rating:
WW 8.5
JL 3.5
BvS 1
MoS 0

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

That’s fair. I didn’t mean to try to call you out specifically or make you feel wrong, sorry if I came across that way. It was definitely better than previous (non-WW) efforts.

WW: 4/5
JL: 2/5 (maybe 2.5 if I’m feeling generous)
BVS: 1.5/5
MOS: 0
SS: 0

I haven’t seen Justice League, but I’m gonna leave my unsolicited opinion anyway:

I am 100% confident in saying Suicide Squad is the worst movie I’ve ever seen.

This take is objectively correct.

I’m one of those who is lucky enough/daft enough to have really enjoyed 80% of the DC movies in this recent run. But after hearing rumours that (true or not) there’s apparently going to be yet another course correction because JL didn’t perform as well as expected I really think it’s time for them to stop trying to make a cohesive universe happen. It’s just not working because they’re making it up as they go and being completely reactionary.

The original (admittedly vague) intention years ago was to have MOS set in the Nolanverse and look how far away from that things are now. I think the whole thing would work much more smoothly if they simply made standalone stories.

I’m a big fan, I own all four films so far on 3D blu-ray and I’ll be buying JL too. But if I am feeling more awkward than excited at the prospect of what that JL end credit scene was setting up and their upcoming roster in general then something’s gone wrong.

Cool.

Come on, you know I don’t really mean he should be shot.

From the movie 12 Angry Men

But supposing he really did hear it. This phrase, how many times have all of us used it? Probably thousands. “I could kill you for that, darling.” “Junior, you do that once more and I’m gonna kill you.” “Get in there, Rocky, and kill him!”… See, we say it every day. That doesn’t mean we’re gonna kill anyone.

There really isn’t that much to the Nolan movies beyond scale. I like them, but I totally get why someone wouldn’t. They’re far from the masterpieces some claim they are. In fact, I don’t think I even finished The Dark Knight the last time I watched it.

Had I more patience, if I cared enough about this discussion, perhaps I’d elaborate. But my supply of patience and caring are running low at the moment, and there’s no telling when I’ll go out to the store to buy some more.
