so, I've been wondering, have they come up with a name for the shooting style that we see in shows like 24, NYPD Blue, and Law and Order? You know, the slightly shakey camera work and fast pans during scenes.

Yes...it's called "tired".

Documentary style.

that's what they call documentary style? Then I must be shooting in a different style altogether

Tired, as in overused.

Meaning that the documentary style of taping TV shows has become far too overused since it seems to be the videography style du jour. Too many shows are using it and it loses its impact when you see it everywhere.

Bochco's success yielded the industry's mediocrity. Hollywood is full of un-original, bandwagon-jumping bastards. NYPD Butts was original when it came out and was wildly successful. Thus it got copied, to the point of being commonplace. The Shield, which is one of my favorite shows, is still just NYPD Blue set in LA with dirty cops.

A similar thing happened with the X-files. How many paranormal shows that were shot on film (vs video) sprang up after that surprise hit? Hardly any survived for any length of time.

Then with CSI ... all these shows (including House, of all things) have these train-of-thought camera shots that give the perspective of some inanimate object. The Simpsons gave a really good rip on this last month with Wiggum's "perspective gun" from the future.

Then The Dead Zone (which stylized itself after the X-files visually as well as the blend of standalones and story arc episodes) spawned a whole bunch of rip-offs like Tru Calling and Medium. Take a used concept, add hot chicks, call it new and original.

Now the documentary-comedy style made popular by Arrested Development is being copied. Tape on Bochco-style camera shakiness, remove the laugh track, add funny-ass narration and you've got a successful mockumentary. So everybody is now trying to do mockumentaries styled like Arrested Development, but this time viewers in America aren't adding their own laugh track either.

Edit: And yes, I know that Arrested Development ultimately owes it's existence to Spinal Tap.
I am fluent in over six million forms of procrastination.

They did it again this past week with Wiggum investigating Bart's kidnapping and we get the CSI-eye view from inside the soda can. Cracked me up.

well, it's good to know these things and anyways, the reason I asked is that my boss happens to like that style of documentary. He recently said that he wants me to shoot in that style of shooting mixed with the "Home Project" style shows like Extreme Makeover and Trading Spaces. they also like the four-in-one editing effect. What he wants this used for is a documentary that I'm doing on the church being re-modeled. I know that that style is gettin old but he wants to use it cause you don't see it that much in Church videos. They want to get away from "religious"-type styles and go for something different. Thing is this isn't all that different any more. But I haven't been shooting in that style thus far and I let him know that. The finished product is going to have a noticable difference midway through. But at the same time, it's nice to learn something different and expand my knowledge of my craft a bit
