The Shining - 35mm print opportunity (a WIP) — Page 7

Maybe someone should offer $300 on the incomplete print with better colour on that ‘other’ forum. I think $620 + shipping is too much for a print missing Reel-4.

That one is pretty impressive. Almost hard to believe that it’s 36 years old…

Hello, I did preserved “The Shining” from the 1981 first UK VHS release! I captured 720p [25gb] mkv with uncompressed PCM Mono Sound using JVC BR-7000ERA Professional VCR. Sound is very hard . If anyone is interested in this or in sound only, please contact me.

I’ve been trying to color correct some of the clips using the open matte DVD as a reference.

Reel 7 Clip: https://we.tl/Vf3yTnMhfR

I used the LUT from this scene and then used it for another reel, made a few tweaks, and got this result:

Before and after:

When the LUT is applied to most of the other clips, the colors can get pretty close to the DVD. It’s far from perfect but it’s a start.

Dvd colours can hardly be taken as correct reference. From my experience, I’ve almost never seen any home video faithfully preserve the 35mm print look. I think many will prefer the warmer toned look of the better print (not this red faded one) as seen in the earlier photos. The warm yellow-orange tone of the prints suits Shining the best. I truly appreciate your effort at correcting the colour, just saying that the unfaded print (not the one you have) colours are perfect and beautiful; much better than colours on the DVD.

What you can do is add a bit of warm filter to your corrected image and see how it looks. Poita’s images from the print that’s missing reel 4 is the correct warm colour and shows the beautiful orange timing. That should be the true reference colour-wise.

I have seen this a few months ago as well. I forgot the link. This should be the actual colour reference for this project. The warm-orange colours in this new print are beautiful and very very '80s.

There are several clips from The Shining in the 1983 horror doc Terror In The Aisles, which is an extra on the Universal Blu Ray release of Halloween II. Would be interesting to compare those.

I recently saw the documentary, Room 237, (about people with their, shall we say, creative theories about Kubrick’s hidden messages in the film) and the tennis ball shot is a proper yellow! Wonder what the actual source was they used for this?

Any progress on this? Can the missing reel be found/added from elsewhere, or an intact print?

Just stumbled across this thread. Is there any progress on this project? I have the open matte DVD, but I assume a 35mm scan would look better.

I saw a 35mm copy of this film at FLorida State University’s Student Life Center last night, and it got me very interested in this project! any updates?

I watched this documentary last night… Yeah a bit of whacky fun. The moon landing conspiracy theory was my favorite one but i don’t really believe it had any factual evidence.

I think what can be inferred is that there is a personal message in there and what it is who knows? But the people and their theories all agree on there is more to it than you think and I also agree with that. But i am not sure i believe any of the theories even though they were quite interesting from genocide of Native american indians, greek mythology, Nazis and the holocaust and faked moon landings it was bizarre but also made me feel normal 😃

The orientation maps were cool i digged that too!

Were you ready to take an axe and chase the guy with the constant creepy little laugh within the first five minutes he was on? 😉

It is being worked on, although slowly as there’s a lot of color correction to deal with. There were some issues with a certain Mr. Grady, who has a very different concept of what correction means, but he too has been corrected. 😉

There might be a work in progress grindhouse version before spring. Cross your fingers!

Sounds great. A project definitely worth waiting for.

On a related note, I recently got my hands on a factory sealed remastered VHS circa 2001 with Dolby Surround for next to nothing. Going to capture it on the off chance it’s a different sound mix as opposed to a fold down of the 5.1 mixes that have been on every DVD and Blu Ray release this century.

Yes, I’m obsessed. 😉

The tape has no Macrovision copy protection at all. Yay!

Most if not all Warner Bros. tapes I’ve captured had no Macrovision copy protection.

Ah, I thought perhaps they just didn’t give a crap towards in the final years of VHS. Saved me having to plug another video source into my DVD recorder to get around that as I’m just after the audio.
Pleasantly surprised the tape is in great shape. Factory sealed or not, there was always the possibility it was exposed to a strong magnetic field or stored in a detrimental environment all these years.

just stumbled upon this:

http://www.astebolaffi.it/en/lot/754/23/detail

“Long cut of the original film The Shining containing the scene in which Wendy, played by Shelley Alexis Duvall, carries Danny, played by little Danny Lloyd. These cuts, given by Kubrick to D’Alessandro, are particularly rare because the director notoriously burned all the leftovers at the conclusion of the editing.”

hefty price, though 😦
