The Lost Cut? I seem to remember hearing about that before. I assumed it wasn't, mostly because I thought the title was for a reason and it wasn't readily available.
I've never actually seen this disk. Once I get my burner running, I could ask him to borrow it and then burn a copy and send it to you to identify it. The only problem being that the disc is probably dual-layer and I only have a single layer burner. Maybe I could put it on two discs in different parts.
Wow- had no idea it was this rare. If it's what you think it is, which I don't know. It did seem weird that the editor would degrade the picture and the effects for a new edit- maybe it was an attempt to make it look old-fashioned.
But I repeat- I haven't seen this. I don't want to get your hopes up if it turns out to be fake.

If your friend isn't lying, the editor of that cut didn't deliberately degrade the quality. The edit is 30 years old.
The edit you're describing was a rough cut assembled from black and white footage as a temp track to see what the finished film would look like. It is, in essence, the workprint of Star Wars.
If you get ahold of it, rip the disc and burn the .vobs to two dvds and pass them along to Rikter or myself. Either of us could easily reassemble the halves and make you a DL disc, share said disc with others, and be able to tell rather quickly if the disc is real or a forgery.
