All the actors who played the Emperor???

Author
Time
Hi. I'm trying to figure out who played the Emperor in the different movies, originals and SE etc.

I looked on IMDB and found the following:

Star Wars (Ep 4): no entry for Emperor
ESB: Clive Revill but only as the voice. Well if he was the voice who was the human?!
ROTJ: Ian McDiarmid Really?!?!?! Or was that one of the edits?

I don't need to list for Ep1 and 2 cause we know it was Ian McDiarmid.
I'm just wondering if Ian was the actor who played the emperor in Eps 4 and 5 and was it really him in 6?!

Thanks!

Yep, it was really him in ROTJ.

Yeah but in 2007 there will be probably a "dissolving the senate" or "meeting the Emperor in Coruscant" scenes that Lucas might make.

The emperor does not appear on episode 4. On episode 5, the emperor was voiced by Clive Revill and it's face was a woman I think, with gorilla eyes overimposed. On the 2004 DVDs, it's Ian McDiarmid. On VI, I, II and III, it was Ian McDiarmid.

Ok that was what confused me about V and the voice credit on IMDB and then the newer edition hearing that it was Ian.
So they simply changed the voice for the newer V but not the visuals.
Clearly I need to watch the original IV, V, and VI again and I haven't since 1997 and my memory
of it has gotten fuzzy.
Thanks!

No cyberdave, they actually changed the whole emperor on the ESB DVDs, not only the voice.

Actually, not quite. They changed both the voice and the visuals for Palpatine in ESB. The original Emperor is far less clear to see. The face is lurking under the shadow of the hood far more than the visual of the Emperor in the 2004 DVDs.

This is the pre-2004 Emperor as he appeared in ESB...

This is the 2004 DVD edition...

I get a knot in my stomach whenever I see those two images together. Seriously. Same actor or not, its like someone is sticking a hot poker into my memories and saying "f** you! f** you!!!!". Not even getting into dialogue changes, but it NEVER bothered me at any age that the image of the Emperor changed between films. NEVER.

Uh...yeah. 'FIGS' hunh? I think there may be a vowel problem there but that's another story. (rolls eyes)

On a happier note, did anyone else catch that the REAL Boba Fett, actor Jeremy Bulloch, had a cameo in ROTS as 'Captain Colton' on Bail Organa's Blockade Runner? Cool!!!

Also, anyone notice that he addressed that one officer as "Captain Antilles" whom Vader kills at the start of ANH and who Threepio says was "Our Last Master"

I picked up on that one. I also thought his uniform was a throwback to the 70s ... not necessarily Star Wars, but other cheesy sci-fi we loved like Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica. Don't know why, but that's what the Alderaanian uniforms look like in Ep III to me.

Well, the film was supposed to look like a bridge between the 2000s and the 1970s, for obvious reasons. I said "supposed to", because they failed rather miserably at it.

hmmm, since it was brought up.

The Captain Antillies was obviously done so we know how R2 and C-3PO came to be where they were at the start of Episode IV. My question however is about the Droids cartoon series. Was this canon? I thought this took place before Episode IV, but the PT basically throws all the background about R2 and C-3PO this series established out the window because it cant fit into the SW time line the PT set up (we know where threepio is since the day he's created now)

Besides, its meant to be enjoyed, not thought of as a part of the "real" story.

No, "Droids" is not cannon. It's not part of the official timeline.

AHA! Thanks for that! Now I get it. And see it!

I was about 15 or 16 when SW came out and so I have on the one hand a desire to have
the original versions as I saw them in the movies.

On the other hand though, I do want to at least rent the newer versions just to see what
they did out of curiosity.
I saw the first SW SE in the theature back in 97 when it came out but I didnt bother going
to see the other two.

And soon starting in 2006 I think they are all being rereleased in Imax 3D!
I certainly won't miss that!
But I would guess that the Imax ANH will be the newer 2004 edition as will
all the others as well.

No but I did notice that the ship was the one that they are on at the start of ANH.
I'm watching ANH now and will see Sith again later in the week so I will keep an eye out for these
items.
Also in the closing scene of Sith where both Darth's are looking out at the Death Star, you can see a figure
that looks like Grand Moff Tarkin (Peter Cushing) by the window. I think it's a cgi bit though
since Cushing is dead.

It is tarkin, but its not cgi, its an actor in make-up

I totally agree. In fact, the original ESB Emperor looks more than the ROTJ Emperor than the new inserted McDiamid Emperor. What is with that make-up??
