A day after a gunman massacred parishioners in a small Texas church, the Air Force admitted on Monday that it had failed to enter the man’s domestic violence court-martial into a federal database that could have blocked him from buying the rifle he used to kill 26 people.

Under federal law, the conviction of the gunman, Devin P. Kelley, for domestic assault on his wife and toddler stepson — he had cracked the child’s skull — should have stopped Mr. Kelley from legally purchasing the military-style rifle and three other guns he acquired in the last four years.

“The Air Force has launched a review of how the service handled the criminal records of former Airman Devin P. Kelley following his 2012 domestic violence conviction,” the Air Force said in a statement.

The statement said Heather Wilson, the Air Force secretary, and Gen. David Goldfein, the Air Force chief of staff, had ordered the Air Force inspector general to “conduct a complete review of the Kelley case.”

I wonder why Alaska’s gun death rate is so high.

Suicide. For real. Which is a huge chunk (over 60%) of all these guns deaths, but Alaska has either the first- or second-highest rate in the country, depending on the year (they trade places with Wyoming). Native Alaskans have one of the highest suicide rates on the planet.

Also, state gun regulations all have the “neighbor state” problem. If you’re near a state with lax gun laws, do the strict gun laws have as much of an effect in your state? Hawaii is a bit of an example of what happens when you have strict* gun laws and no neighbor state problem.

* “Strict” on a US scale, which goes from “very lax” at one end to “completely irresponsible regulatory void” at the other.

Sounds like we should ban suicide.

It did used to be a crime, but neither suicide nor attempted suicide was ever prosecuted. Apparently state laws that criminalized suicide were abolished in federal court. So now it is not.

Ridiculous argument.

That’s why it’s a joke and not an argument.

Yeah it’s absolutely insane that this guy was allowed to slip through the cracks. This is exactly why we have background checks and FBI databases and all these laws to prevent this kind of thing.

Now if only we actually enforced them…

Just a reminder, it’s almost 2018 and yet…

https://www.eater.com/2017/11/7/16617414/papa-johns-neo-nazis-white-supremacist

Papa John’s, the pizzeria equivalent of the shrug emoji, is now doing everything it can to try to distance itself from toxic white supremacist site the Daily Stormer, which posted a supportive message about the chain last week.

As you may recall, Papa John’s CEO John Schnatter recently blamed his group’s declining sales on the NFL players’ protest during the national anthem. The company took a beating on social media after this reveal, and its rival, DiGiorno, launched a hilarious shade war on Twitter in response to this debacle. Toward the end of last week, the Daily Stormer — which lost its domain host after its coverage of the tragic events in Charlottesville, Virginia over the summer — posted a photo of a pizza with a pepperoni swastika, with the caption: “Papa John: Official pizza of the alt-right?” The author of this post, Adrian Sol also wrote that it was “starting to make economic sense to be pro-White,” and that this “might be the first time ever in modern history that a major institution is going to be completely destroyed explicitly because of public outrage over their anti-white agenda.” This post spawned a few disgusting memes, including one that incrporated KKK imagery.

Shortly after the Daily Stormer post went live, Peter Collins, the director of PR for Papa John’s, issued a statement denouncing the hate group’s message. “We condemn racism in all forms and any and all hate groups that support it.” Collins explained. “We do not want these individuals or groups to buy our pizza.” That’s some pretty decisive language, but it might not be enough to win back customers who were turned away by Schnatter’s remarks about the NFL, even before the Daily Stormer’s endorsement.

Another, much less serious issue that the company faces, is the fact that this whole fiasco has only highlighted how so many people think Papa John’s serve garbage pizza.

I mean we’re basically living in a South Park episode now that neo-nazis are choosing an “official pizza,” right?

I think there needs to be an outside investigation of the Air Force’s record keeping, for incompetence.

The gunman who opened fire in a church outside San Antonio, killing at least 26 people, escaped from a mental health facility in 2012 after he was caught sneaking guns onto an Air Force base and “attempting to carry out death threats” made against military superiors, according to a police report.

The report said officers with the El Paso, police were dispatched to a bus terminal after Devin P. Kelley‘s escape from a behavioral facility about seven miles away in New Mexico. Officers wrote they were told Kelley, who intended to take a bus out of the state, “was a danger to himself and others” at the time and noted that he “was also facing military criminal charges.”

This incident occurred the same year that Kelley was court-martialed. He was charged with abusing his wife and her son between April 2011 and April 2012 and then sentenced in November 2012, according to Air Force documents.
