A Jedi does not rummage for his lightsaber. He calls it with the force and it comes.
Just touching on this again,
No matter how Luke does it, if he picks his saber back up, his throwing it meant nothing but to look cool for a moment.
I believe Neverar and myself posted some pretty sound responses to this as well after your own post. In context to what actually ends up happening, I have to disagree with you based on the below reasons:

Yes the death star was starting to catastrophically fail but it would only have taken a second for him to call it to himself with the force as he was dragging Vader towards the lift (as Nightstalkerpoet alluded to).
If you still feel differently, what do you feel the reason is for him throwing it away then and why do you feel it is nullified by him retrieving it afterwards?
