I think that Guiness's performance was just nuanced enough that you can read familiarity with the droids into it. Really, in Episodes 2 and 3 he wasn't around Threepio all that much.. .and stuff.
Not to mention there's like 3 billion other identical looking protocol droids in the Star Wars universe.
I agree with lots of stuff in this thread but I still loved the movie.
