You need a printer that has a tray specifically for printing on discs.

bummer. I guess I’ll go get the Sharpie then.

Or you can, despite them being printable, buy adhesive CD labels and print disc art on those.

It’s what most of us do, I’d imagine.

only use adhesive labels if you want your disc to be unusable in a year or two. the adhesive warps the disc when it dries.

What? No.
I’m extremely skeptical about this.

Not that I bother with it much though since I have a media server.

At work I’ve seen what adhesive can do to burnable media over time, it is not pretty (and I’m talking like just scotch tape… there were visible “waves” out from it in dye on the other side). Not to say that every adhesive will do the same with every disc, but it has certainly given me great pause in ever considering doing the same at home to anything I care about. Inkjet printable is as far as I go, and I’ve done so with surprisingly good results on a very affordable epson printer, which you wouldn’t even know has a CD tray unless you look just right…

I’ve never seen that at all, but I have seen the adhesive lose its adhesion inside a hot player and come off the disc, gumming up the player fairly hopelessly. Printable discs or sharpies.

When 6 disc cd players became big for car manufacturers, adhesive label cd’s where a nightmare and wrought havoc on factory sounds systems across the galaxy. The same thing happens in blu ray players. It is best to avoid labels and get a printer if you are ready to make a nice Despecialized set. I bought my Canon from Amazon for 70 USD.

This absolutely happens. I printed labels and put them on many discs ~15 years ago. All the discs with printed labels became trash, and everything stored properly is still fine (the labeled ones were definitely otherwise stored well, as they were in individual cases).

As far as the effect of the label drying, it was the biggest problem for CDs. CD surface/label layer is the data layer. If you damage it, or write on it with pencil or rip it off with a label, that’s your data you’re removing.

DVDs and BDs have their data underneath the plastic rather than on/under the label. So I think the main risk for them is unevenly weighting the disc or having it peel off and get stuck in a drive. I’ve never had a label on a BD-R. But at least for DVD-Rs, those things were already poorly read by many drives and didn’t need anything else causing them trouble!

Fair enough, what I encountered at work quite likely was a burned CD rather than a DVD. I didn’t realize though that DVD is less susceptible to data loss from label side damage, that’s interesting to know, and I’ll certainly be looking into that more.

Yeah. On CDs the label is the data. On DVDs, the data layer is fairly safely sandwiched between two halves of the thick plastic layer. And for BDs, it’s extremely close to the surface opposite the label. I.e., most of the plastic is in between the data and the label. So any scratch that makes it through is likely to cause major damage to the data instead of just affecting readability (which can be fixed by resurfacing a CD). That’s why BDs have a scratch resistant coating.

Checksum for two-part Return of the Jedi v. 2.5

Can someone post the checksum information for the two-part Uloz rar archives for the MKV version of Return of the Jedi version 2.5? The files are HARMY-DEED-VI-V2.5-MKV-MANUAL.part1.rar and HARMY-DEED-VI-V2.5-MKV-MANUAL.part2.rar.

The checksums on the individual archives don’t match the verification tables (which I guess is just for the one-part archive file?). I used my office computer to download the two archive files, and I need to be extra sure I got the right thing before I extract it all.

Many thanks.

I don’t have the checksums for these rar files, but I can give you the checksums for the extracted mkv of RotJ DeEd v2.5 MKV:

  • CRC-32 - 50B268A4
  • MD5 - BB61CFE99632010CDD13BA8F5CEFD35A
  • SHA-1 - B4F94227497D4C983F90CF03ED7BC084A1CA51F1

These are taken from the link in section 6 of “The Ultimate Guide” to obtaining Harmy’s work. The guide is by HanDuet, and can be found via the link in post 1 of this thread.

Those I have seen.

So, a technical follow-up question: let’s assume I actually downloaded an archive containing a malicious file, rather than the real DeEd. Will I harm my system just by extracting it so I can run the checksum on the extracted mkv? Or will I be OK as long as I don’t run any of the extracted files?

It probably isn’t worth it for you windows people to take the risk, especially if you’re on a computer that’s not your own, like a work computer. I’d say transfer it to something expendable (a VM, another windows computer, a Linux computer, a Linux live USB, just something else) and extract it there, if you have any reason to be concerned.

You can always open the first rar file in 7zip (or equivalent program) without extracting and take a peek at what lies inside. There should be an MKV, readme, and probably a checksum utility. Merely extracting files from within rars is perfectly safe - as you point out, problems may only arise if you open them afterwards.

A trick I like to use if I’m in doubt is to extract the contents with 7zip, and remove all file extensions afterwards. That way the files can’t accidentally be opened by double clicking on them. Once I’ve checked checksums and scanned for viruses etc. I put the file extensions back.

Yoda-sama’s point about not using a work computer to extract is a good one, just in case the contents are dodgy and flagged up as such automatically to your IT people by a virus checker. You could always copy the rars to a USB stick (32GB should suffice for the MKV) and extract at home.

Posting URLs to downloads is against forum rules. Link removed. – Jay

I am having trouble downloading part09 from this set…
I am using FreeRapid Downloader version 0.9u4 (according to the title bar anyway), and I have successfully downloaded everything else up to this point, and used 7zip to extract the rar files successfully and played the movies to test, but this one URL won’t download.
[redacted by moderator]
I have tried closing and re-opening FRD as well as rebooting my computer, as well as waiting a day in case I hit download limits. Regarding download limits, I have hit roadblocks downloading the NJVC Custom Bluray Set, but waiting resolved those problems, and I can keep on going, but this strategy is not working here with, let’s call it part09. I have tried validating the URL in FRD (right click, ‘validate’), I have tried going to part09’s URL directly in a web browser taking me to a page all in Czech I presume, and used my intuition to find the appropriate download button and download there, but I get an error saying “That didn’t work out very whale. An error occurred. Take a break and try again later”

Do I still need to just wait again? I have tried searching these forums to see if someone had a similar error, “error starting download” and I did not find anything, perhaps I did not search hard enough. Also I hope this is the correct discussion to post something like this. I can’t say I am a veteran at this whole process, but I have downloaded harmy’s DE before.

Also please let me know what other information could be helpful to those willing to help, I don’t know what information would be beneficial and what is unimportant. Also it seems to think this part09 is 524 MB instead of 500 MB like all the other parts in the rar file set

I can PM you an alternate link for that exact same file. I got it previously from the same link you are now having trouble with and saved it to my own account. Although I’m a little puzzled too, because it is 500 MB just like the others, despite the fact that uloz.to is saying that they are all 524 MB.

Would you like me to do that?

Also on a side note, you can view uloz.to in English. When you access a uloz link in your browser, click the drop down menu in the upper right hand corner and change the Czech flag to an English flag.

Hi, I’m having the same problem as well, but with part01 instead 😐 oh well. As far as I can tell, part09 downloaded just fine, although I’m not sure if its intact.

If there is only one of the rars that is problematic, try downloading just it through your browser instead of FRD. That has done the trick for me before.

I think our point is that going through the browser doesn’t help either, hence we get the “That didn’t work out very whale. An error occurred. Take a break and try again later”

Artkingjw, I never heard back from RyanY, but my offer to send an alternate link to the needed file via PM would be open to you as well, theoretically.

Although…noticing Jay’s redaction of the post above, I’d want to make sure it is ok to do that.

Jay, is sending alternate file download links ok as long as it isn’t posted publicly?

If at all possible, I’d appreciate one as well. I’ve been dealing with the same problem for about 72 hours now, and it’s the only missing bit I need.
