Any Interest in the Preservation of a 35mm print of The Keep?

From Jade33 at MySpleen:

“If we got enough people to donate, we could rent and scan a 35mm print of The Keep. I know someone who has it. $250 for rental plus the shipping cost, about $480 to scan it. Just something to think about.”

“Ok, a bit more info on The Keep print.
From the guy who has it said…”
“It’s scope, LPP, and it’s beautiful.”

Let us know cheers 😃

Mod Edit: see LucasGodzilla and timemeddler posts in this thread for details of releases for this project…

Holy crap! This would be great, I know there is still no true HD transfer of it.

Is the 35mm print you have the full 3½ hour version?

If so, money won't be an issue for me and I'll donate whatever amount needed!

Some how i doubt it's the full 3½ hours, didn't even know there was a version that long?

Edit:  Just found out it's the 96min theatrical cut.

Heck, it's not even on DVD.

I think people should donate even though it's the theatrical cut. I've never even seen this movie, and I'll donate anyway.

Same here, never saw the movie but i wouldn't mind seeing a nice print of it.

I’ve recently capped and put on myspleen a 720p and 1080i Australian hdtv copy though its still from the laserdisc master its probably the best we have until a 35mm can be privately scanned.

Thanks for doing this.

You should edit your post to remove the direct Myspleen link. It's against forum rules.

Oh my, this needs to happen.

It will be the only way we can see it in the non LD master.

FWIW, on IMDB it says this movie just showed up on Itunes.

Yeah, anyone wanna bet it's just the same master again?

I think the only way to get the "Director's Cut" of "The Keep" would be to coordinate a heist to steal the print from the located vault where I'm sure all the elements are just withering away.  Michael Mann disowns this film and has pretty much been the one behind this not getting released properly for a long time.  Maybe someday when "Mann" is no longer around or has a change of heart then some label could go searching and put it together.  Kind of like what happened with "Nightbreed."

Would appreciate a myspleen invite if anyone can spare one.

Nightbreed happened because fans were able to pressure the owners into letting it happen, and because Barker wanted it to happen. If Michael Mann doesn't want anything to do with the movie, EVEN making a Director's Cut, I have no idea how long it will take for a proper release.

And also, a 35mm preservation of the theatrical cut should still be done if at all possible, because even if we all agree it's inferior to what could have been, if Mann does come around and do a director's cut we probably still won't get a physical HD release of the theatrical cut for as long as he's breathing.

Thanks for doing this.  A contact hooked me up with both.  I took the 1080 cap, changed the frame-rate, synced it to the Netflix version, and re-encoded it with x264.  The result is an MKV with the audio from the Netflix version (re-encoded to AC-3 at a bitrate transparent to the source) and a second audio track that someone called Elmo Oxygen made to make the dialogue more audible.  What we really need is the PCM from the LaserDisc...

If anyone is interested, PM me.

 Hi,

I have the laserdisc if this project goes ahead and someone can assist me to get the pcm off it

cheers

Necroupdate and slightly off topic, but thought maybe someone still subscribed to this thread may be interested…

Just released a fan restoration project; used the 1080i HDTV source provided by ShaneLSD (THANKS A LOT!); regraded using DVD as color reference (hence now no more magenta blanket) and slapped a 35mm film grain plate over it, slowed down to proper 23.976fps, got the usual five audio and subs languages tracks, plus the restored soundtrack, all as a BD-25 - indeed, around 12GB, as it’s very soft, and 16mbps average video bitrate retain all the details and grain.

Have fun!

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

Or is there a thread?

So I’m guessing nothing came of this. Would be incredible if it did though.

yes it would, which begs the question, how rare are prints of this?

The problem is that no one seems to want to contribute any money to pay for accessing the print or converting it to HD. Granted, what if it is a scam? I wouldn’t want to shell out $400 to $600 on a complete “roll of the dice” just to get an email with a troll face on it.

If the guy was willing to take pictures of the film reels and post some screen caps off of the negative/print to give an idea what it looks like, I would front the money in a heartbeat. Hell, a true 35mm negative of THE KEEP has been played in theaters last year, so I know they exist.
