Well we’ll see. I gave my word that I would give the female Doctor a chance, so I will.

And here I haven’t watched Doctor Who since “The Time of the Doctor” (the Matt Smith Christmas Town episode).

I haven’t seen any episodes with whats-his-buckets after Matt Smith.

Yes. No, I haven’t seen any Peter Capaldi episodes yet.

Capaldi’s great, but the writing is pretty sub-par. Oh wait, I must be in the wrong thread.

Indeed. Not impressed by the Discovery crew’s swearing in the latest episode. This heralds back to my previous arguments about how just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. Why they have to say f*** and sh** just because they don’t have TV broadcast censors is beyond baffling to me. Being gratuitously vulgar is not “hip”. It does not add depth to the characters or the story. This show, while gritty, was still somewhat family friendly on a certain level. Now it is not.

Star Trek is supposed to be family friendly. I want to be able to watch Trek with my young daughter. But I sure as hell can’t watch Discovery with her now until she’s a teenager.

JEDIT: After some thought, that seals it. I’m not purchasing this stupid show when it comes out on disc. Nor am I going to pay CBS monthly for it.

How is all manners of blood and violence “family friendly” but saying something is “fucking awesome” not?

Because, at a certain age, watching a violent scene does not necessarily make a child have violent thoughts or violent tendencies. But kids will repeat things they hear people say. My sister had issues with my nephews doing that for a very long time indeed. She had to be very strict about it because they would laugh together and endlessly repeat it.

Similarly with sex… I watched the Tim Burton Batman film in the theatre when I was 11; but my parents would not let me watch Spaceballs. My mother said the reason why is because I was still developing my identity or my understanding of sexuality at the time, whereas she knew violence would not affect my developing mind the same way.

Profanity in Trek has always been around, but used to make a point. When Kirk says Let’s get the hell out of here at the end of City on the Edge of Forever, it emphasizes the pain straightening out the timeline has caused him. And you generally couldn’t say hell on network tv in the '60’s. Roddenberry and company allegedly butted heads with NBC standards and practices to keep that line intact.

In the movies, it was funny and in character when McCoy called Spock an green blooded SOB. Kirk’s reaction to David’s death in TSFS equally in character. Scotty saying Klingon Bitch in TUC seemed undignified.
TVH gave the impression humanity had left a lot of casual swearing behind.

Data cursing in Generations can be construed as getting a cheap laugh or the character trying to be more human. I’m still amazed TNG got away with Picard uttering merde on tv.

Dropping an F bomb in Trek doesn’t seem to have any good reason behind it.

I’m not defending the f-bomb, seemed pretty random and unnecessary, but I just don’t see the big deal. Kids are going to hear those words one way or another, can’t escape it. Who gives a fuck, as long as you teach them right.

As for our prudish attitudes toward sex, I think it’s pretty ridiculous that we allow our children to become to desensitized to violence at a young age, but grow up overly sensitive to the idea of sex, which is just a natural and unharmful thing.

But whatever, I don’t have kids so don’t listen to me.

Disney should get the South Park guys to write songs for their next animated movie then. 😛

It’s not just for her. It’s for me. It annoyed me because it added nothing. There was no point to it at all other than for shock value. I hate it when streamed shows add “mature” content for the sake of being “edgy”. It’s actually immature. It’s like a child doing things deliberately because their parents won’t find out.

So I’m a prude. So what. I wouldn’t mind it if it had a point.

Besides that, it is possible to be classy and funny at the same time. For example, in Stargate SG-1, Vala Mal Doran was burned alive by the followers of the Ori. When Daniel asked her about why, she said “I explained politely who we were, and she said I was overcome, at which point I suggested that she should procreate…with herself.”

That is humorous and yet tasteful. There is no need to push one’s ability to be casually crass for its own sake. That’s not adult, it’s childish.

I know you said you’re not defending it. It just… irks me. This show irks me in a continually growing myriad of ways.

Meanwhile, I’m continuing to be more and more fond of The Orville. The crew really need lessons in proper behavior while in undercover situations, but they are fortunate that their enemies are, for the most part, complete idiots.

I wouldn’t even call it edgy. The phrase that was used, unless I’m misremembering, was “that’s fucking awesome.” It was used in an incredibly pedestrian way. I don’t think maturity even plays into it, the truth is that’s just how many people talk.

I personally didn’t find it out of place because it seemed forced and “edgy”, I found it out of place because it’s Star Trek. Ultimately, as with most things on this show I don’t give a shit, and I think it’s silly to get worked up over a little word, but yeah it was kind of random to see on Star Trek. Maybe if this show was actually adult and serious in ways beyond just mere surface details, it would have worked better.

I don’t know, I was pretty desensitized to violence at a young age and that probably damaged me somehow. I didn’t ever do anything violent, but seeing some surprisingly gory violence in real life like in schoolyard fights and other kids’ bike crashes had no effect on me ever.

the cursing also doesn’t make sense canon-wise. Star Trek IV makes clear that they don’t swear every other in the 23rd century.

I can’t comprehend why someone can’t just ignore the Kelvin timeline and Discovery if they don’t like it.

This.

Canon is an arbitrary concept. Don’t let it determine your focus.

All this talk of non-canon reminds me that I need to get the second collected volume of the newspaper comics at some point.

I do like the Kevin Timeline. I just wanted to like Discovery because it’s Star Trek and I’m generally a fan of the franchise.

I complain because I’m disappointed. I want to like it but I keep finding more and more reasons why I don’t.

If The Orville turned out to be awful right out of the gate, I would have given it up as a bad job right there and left it at that. I keep watching Discovery though because I’m always holding out a hope, but it seems to no avail. The writing is just awful.

I was referring to how Warbler says he can’t bring himself to believe that the original timeline still exists.
