How do you feel about the saga continuing without Palpatine? — Page 2

I mean, it’s been continuing since right after Return of the Jedi with the old Marvel comics, and of course in the nineties with Heir to the Empire and Dark Empire. Ever since I discovered the EU when I was a kid I’ve been fine with the continuation of the saga.

Not enough people read the EU.

I don’t really care that it has continued, but I think the fact that both movies so far have been so dependent on iconic SW characters, imagery, and plot lines shows that there isn’t enough material for there to be a “saga”.

Sorry but that’s like saying the James Bond isn’t James Bond if he drives fast women and goes to bed with a sports car.

The James Bond series has never been described as a “vast cinematic universe” or a “saga”, nor has it been advertised as such. It thrives and always has thrived on predictability.

Agreed. How could new installments of a saga not be dependent on past characters and storylines?

Even the standalone films? Star Trek has done just fine with having a bunch of shows and films that aren’t dependent on the plots and characters of the others.

I was so excited in 1999 for The Phantom Menace. I don’t think any movie will ever match that level of hype for me. I was eventually disappointed though. Still, I kept on hoping each prequel would be better than the last. I think they’re all about the same though.

As the prequels rolled on, it felt like a really dark time for me. So many people seemed to be loving the prequels, and the prequels were the dominating everything that featured Star Wars. I thought that was the end it for me, and there would never be anything I loved as much as the Originals.

Fast forward to The Force Awakens and it was like a blast of fresh air. I loved that Disney acquired Star Wars and I love what JJ did. Then Rogue One and I liked that one even more. Rogue One was the kind of story I would make up in my head as I was playing with Star Wars toys as a kid. I certainly never acted out senate negotiations with my figures.

So do I like the movies continuing? They honestly couldn’t make too many of these for me. I thinks it’s a great time to be a Star Wars fan. I sympathize with the prequel fans who just cant get into these new movies. I’ve been where you are. I firmly believe they will make something you will like eventually, because they sure don’t look like there going to be stopping any time soon, and I couldn’t be happier.

We’ll have to see what direction they take Snoke in. I like the idea that the Jedi were formed to defeat Snoke, so Snoke corrupted one of the Jedi, who then founded the Sith. Now that the Sith are gone, Snoke has decided to take things into his own hands.

Uhm if that’s true you should definitely put it in double quotes for spoilers cuz I sure hadn’t heard that.

It’s just my theory. It comes from my head alone, not from leaks, rumors, or spoilers.

Well gee, OP, thanks for changing the thread title after a full page of discussion happened.

I would’ve done it sooner if I’d known I could. My initial title ended up being misleading. Of course everyone’s happy they’re continuing the saga. I was just wondering how everyone felt about continuing it without certain characters. In the end, I decided to focus on Palpatine.

The title of this thread does point to something interesting: The original and prequel trilogies all worked within the premise that there was a Republic and a Jedi Order, but then the Republic became an Empire and wiped out the Jedi Order, and a Rebellion and the surviving Jedi are trying to bring back the Republic and Jedi Order. TFA has the Empire collapse, a New Republic and Jedi Order form, this Jedi Order also collapse, and the First Order and Resistance form off-screen.

That immediately brings to mind how Marvel decided to skip Spiderman’s origin story this time around (not sure how true that is, since I haven’t seen Homecoming). We’ve the Jedi get wiped out and the villains rise before. Not saying we shouldn’t see it again, or that this was Disney’s reason for continuing the saga in the way they did. Just something it reminded me of.

I don’t really care. All it really does is prove that George was wrong about Star Wars being some super big planned out epic. Turns out its just a serial, always more of the same. Beat one bad guy, move onto the next.

I don’t think it was ever a secret that he was making it up as he goes. Vader is Luke’s father? Leia is Luke’s sister? A second Death Star? Yoda wasn’t Obi-Wan’s master? Count Dooku is our villain now? I could go on and on.

Yoda is a puppet, yoda is a cartoon. Ben Kenobi sounds like a fucking boss, Ben Kenobi sounds like a fucking synthesizer. The Emperor is a monkey, the Emperor is a human. Cloud City has no windows, Cloud City has windows. Lando says ‘attention’ once, Lando says ‘attention’ twice. . . .

If you’re talking about Ewan I thought he did a great job with what he was given. One of the few good things about the prequels in my opinion.

I think he’s talking about the scream to scare off the Tusken Raiders.

It’s confirmed. Lucas is David Lynch’s Black Lodge doppelganger.

I don’t get what you’re saying about Obi-Wan. Is it about changing the krayt dragon call? That, along with all the other changes you mentioned afterwards don’t count. The Emperor was only a monkey because they hadn’t cast him yet. Cloud City having windows is the result of better effects technology. The only thing in here that maybe counts is Yoda being CG in the Prequels. The thing is, all these things are changes to presentation, not narrative.
