It seems that a lot of new EU material in addition to ROTS is... sort of impunining the Jedi Order--making it seem, not corrupt, but dysfunctional. Afterall, they take children from their parents to training long before the child is old enough to understand the comitment... They tend to be rather self-righteous. They lie about the nature of evil, saying that evil is caused by the Dark Side, when it in 'reality' the Dark Side comes from evil.

Stuff like that.

So, Anakin's punishment, I belive, was stated by Padme in the film; he would be banished from the order. I could be wrong though.
