songs of the south (banned disney movie)

This movie was never banned, it simply was 'retired' by Disney due to the controversy that surrounded it even way back before the film was created. 'Retired' doesn't actually mean much for Disney though as they officially 'permanently retired' the film in 1970, then released it cinemas again two years later (then again in '81 and '86)! It was only as recent as 2001 that the video was finally dropped from stores outside of the US, but that probably more has to do with the 'death of VHS' and the financial repercussions of continuing to produce the VHS than anything else. You may wonder why a international DVD hasn't been released if that was the case, but if so then you obviously don't know about Disney's video and DVD release history. They never released every video at one time and often cancelled their big movies to create consumer interest, it is often 'the last time' to buy a Disney classic on video. So currently there are several more Disney movies that aren't available in any format that would be much more popular than Song of the South.
