Oh hai 10-year bump.
Is there something wrong with reviving old threads? It’s not like that much happens on this site anyways, so there’sa no danger of accumulating an overwhelming amount of replies.

It happened. It’s the least offensive ROTJ end it quick move. Retroactively it even makes more sense than Luke being Vader’s son, Leia being Vader’s daughter explains her reckless attempt to save Han while being a Rebel leader with sensitive intel during a crucial period of the war. It explains all the choking. Compared to Yoda’s death scene and Luke’s plan to save Han it’s nothing really. It’s a shame we don’t seem to be getting anything interesting come of it particularly now Carrie has died. Leia would have made a wonderful villain.
I read “Splinter” after seeing ROTJ so I just chalked it up to the writer not knowing what was to come (the way Luke & Leia didn’t know they were siblings).
I saw ROTJ on May 25th, 1983. Loved it then, love it now. I never had a problem with Luke & Leia being siblings.
EDIT: I just noticed this thread is from 2007. lol.
Apparently, an earlier script of RotJ had Vader as the other. That would have been a perfect way to wrap things up.
Sounds like a rumor to me. In the ROTJ scripts Leia was always Luke’s sister.
“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”
So…totally disregard it?

Like, totally.

I’m not gonna take any stance on whether or not it’s real (I can’t be bothered to read the scripts), but regardless, it’s a better idea than making Leia the other.
Luke having a secret long lost sister was an idea that had been around since one of the pre-ANH drafts. I remember reading somewhere that Lucas had always intended to work that into one of his future movies, but by the time ROTJ came around and he had grown tired of the franchise, he chose to wrap everything up by making Leia the long lost sister, rather than introducing a new character.
Anyone else able to enjoy less than perfect movies for what they are without rewriting them in their head?
I’m not sure I follow.
To Anchorhead:
Well, I was there too, back in 1977. I get it. I only like the original three movies. And Splinter, and SOME of the EU. I also used to follow zombie’s thesis from 10 years ago. I no longer do so. It’s occurred to me that, while the characters from the original film not being related to each may or may not hold an appealing asthetic, it’s very possible that this ‘non-relatedness’ was only put there by Lucas as an ‘insurance policy’ to make Star Wars work as a stand-alone film, should it bomb and no sequels get made. And let’s be clear: it’s been revealed from research (that wasn’t available when zombie did his book) that Lucas was planning sequels as early as December of 1975, one of in which we would learn “who Darth Vader is”. And as I’ve said before, in this original version, Vader as Luke’s father didn’t necessarily entail him being the same person as the father character (Annikin/Anakin or “Tan” Skywalker) that Ben talked about in the first film.

No that was my idea.

Not I (and I wouldn’t have it any other way).
I never liked the idea of Luke & Leia as brother and sister. I thought it was one revelation too many (coming so soon after Vader), as well as being convenient and awkwardly shoe-horned into JEDI.
I will say the brother/sister angle works much better in STAR WARS-based porn, than it ever did in the saga.

I grew up with the OT as a six hour movie that ran together in my head to the point where I forgot much of what actually happened in which movie. So I didn’t mind the sibling revalation at all. Nowadays, I think it’s regrettable that they went that direction as it’s a bit too easy, but I don’t mind much. I still love ROTJ.

Each day Return of the Jedi becomes worse and worse of a movie in my mind. Even just a few months ago, my opinion of the movie was much more generous. And it makes me quite sad since I used to love it as a kid.
The sister reveal is definitely one of those things that stands out as a glaring issue but now even what used to be the good things about Return of the Jedi for me have turned into weaknesses. I used to think the stuff with Luke, the Emperor, and Vader was the saving grace of this movie but now all of it just feels cheap, contrived, and lazy. With the emperor saying things like “You, like your father, are now mine.”, or Vader saying “It is useless to resist”. They turned the dark side into some sort of dark force that tempts you and takes control of you. I kind of miss the days when the dark side was simply another philosophy by which force users would follow. When Luke made his decision in Empire Strikes Back to not join Vader, it actually seemed like a hard decision when I was a kid. Vader was his father, they could technically beat the Emperor together, and then rule the galaxy together. It actually seemed like a viable option and Luke was still able to make the right choice. In Return of the Jedi, the Emperor couldn’t have done a worse job of trying to convince Luke to join him. Why is it that because Luke loses his cool for a few moments, would maybe turn him to the dark side. For gods sake, even when he refuses to kill Vader and throws his light saber away it is starting to feel cheap and contrived.
It’s all just probably my mind becoming more and more cynical in thinking but oh well. RIP Return of the Jedi.
Each day I am just becoming more and more worried since Return of the Jedi is losing more of it’s appeal to me everyday.
That’s hardly something to worry about. I used to like lots of things when I was younger that lost their appeal as I grew older. The nice thing is that you also realize as you grow older that these kinds of things aren’t really that important.

Obviously I worry more about actually important things but it sure does make my heart ache. I just can’t seem to find almost any appeal in Return of the Jedi anymore. Apart of me is now wanting to forget it happened.

You actually were the one who made me think of these issues in Return of the Jedi. It just makes me sad cause I now feel that what I considered the best is now along with the other bad things about Return of the Jedi.
