It was still PG the last time I caught it at a revival screening several years back. It and Gremlins led to the PG-13 rating being created though. Parents still drop their kids off at a PG-13 without a second thought.
The whole controversy was quite laughable considering all the smart kids knew which theaters would let them into R rated horror films unchallenged. Even Fangoria magazine offered tips on how to see really scary movies without your parents.
The MPAA changes it’s mind on what one can get away with in a PG film more than most people change their socks. I don’t think the UK has a R rating.
