You could try the alt.video.tape-trading newsgroup, but I don't know how much luck you'll find. If you find the Frighteners stuff, though, let me know, I'd be very interested in it.

P.S. I read a while ago that Song of the South was being prepped for a DVD release soon.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

*edit* reverend, where did you read that song of the south was being prepped for dvd? that would be cool if its coming out. I know there are transfers as you can find them on ebay and other auction sites, but i dont know anyone that has a copy that would make it available via other means

actually, if anyone has a copy of The Legend of Billie Jean send me a pm...the copy i have is corrupt about 2/3's fo the way through.

maybe this should be in off-topic?

he is referring to the international cut, also known as the criterion,it has extra footage(mostly added violence to the scenes and a different ending) and it has the original deckard(Harrison Ford)narration throughout the entire movie, much better version than the directors cut, this version sucks and you would think the directors cut would mean its better, but not in this case.

Song of the South has been "being prepared for DVD" for several years now. And when it does make it to DVD, it will be hacked to pieces. Too many 'racist' things that the DVD-buying public won't be able to put in historical context...

Yup that's the one I upped, I encoded it in XviD format with "1 pass quality", I tried encoding it at a higher bitrate but couldn't see any noticable picture quality improvement (the LD was very grainy compared to something like the definitive SW LDs). I've been working on a higher quality clean-up of the documentary over the past couple of days, now in the final stage of encoding PAL and NTSC DVDs of it.

Farsight also upped a transfer of his Criterion Blade Runner a while back on MySpleen.

It still has four seeds.

I have no direct experience with that, but I highly doubt it was without cuts. Would a broadcaster put the Tar Babies segment on TV? I'd be pretty surprised if they did. Not offended, mind you, but surprised.

This is what I was talking about. That seems pretty solid to me. You might be right about cutting it up, but possibly not.

I have a transfer of Howard on dvd, i was gonna buy a LD off ebay and do it myself but wasnt able to find any that were in my price range (well until after i got the dvd off ebay) but i think those even had the price go up to out of my range. i paid like 10 bucks i think for the disc so it wasnt too bad. its not widescreen unfortunatly and its probably vhs quality, id be down for a better version if anyone has one.

but id really like a working copy of Billie Jean if anyone has one. or maybe a vhs (LD) to transfer it from. I also have a copy of The Wizard (Fred Savage) thats of good vhs quality if i remember correctly.

This movie was never banned, it simply was 'retired' by Disney due to the controversy that surrounded it even way back before the film was created. 'Retired' doesn't actually mean much for Disney though as they officially 'permanently retired' the film in 1970, then released it cinemas again two years later (then again in '81 and '86)! It was only as recent as 2001 that the video was finally dropped from stores outside of the US, but that probably more has to do with the 'death of VHS' and the financial repercussions of continuing to produce the VHS than anything else. You may wonder why a international DVD hasn't been released if that was the case, but if so then you obviously don't know about Disney's video and DVD release history. They never released every video at one time and often cancelled their big movies to create consumer interest, it is often 'the last time' to buy a Disney classic on video. So currently there are several more Disney movies that aren't available in any format that would be much more popular than Song of the South.

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.
Everything is better on a laserdisc. Whatever happened to the laserdisc? Laserdisc!

There aren't any widescreen releases of Howard the Duck on VHS or LD unfortunately, I have The Wizard on DVD from Germany, had to remaster it with the original English audio from my VHS though. One laserdisc I'd like to get is The Wizard of Speed and Time to replace my VHS but the eBay prices are crazy, will just have to settle for my pretty good LD rip of it.

edit: holy crap! have you seen the prices for The Frighteners signature collection LD box set on eBay? average $200+, I'd like to see it but not at that price (plus the cost of an RF AC3 decoder to get the best out of the audio)

I've got the whole Frighteners LD set on VHS (including the commentary). But that's just it, it's VHS. But if I have to, I'll make myself DVDs of the whole thing from my tapes.

Anyone have any Hong Kong laserdiscs? I'm specifically looking for Jackie Chan movies that was never released in the western world uncut such as First Strike and Rumble in the Bronx.

I'd be VERY interested in a DVD-copy of "The Frighteners" Signature Collection... especially the 4 hour documentation. I got that one from eDonkey a while ago, but the quality was terrible... and the image was stuttering like hell. Any chance that anyone here could make a copy of the docu (maybe split onto two DVDs) or even the whole set and share it? MySpleen maybe?

I've got that Frighteners set on 2 discs. Black levels are weak but otherwise okay. It's an amazing set. Crime that it's not on DVD.

I also have LD rips of Police Squad!

I'd like the Criterion version of Adventures of Baron Munchausen, myself ....
