Idea & Info: Prequel Trilogy Preservation???

Hello. I’ve been reading these boards for over half a year now and just decided to join. I’ve been reading a lot of posts lately about Revenge of the Sith. And a lot of them seem very much for editing the DVD release of this movie to re-insert scenes like Yoda landing on Dagobah or the scene between Qui-Gon and Yoda.

Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this site dedicated to “the preservation of classic sci-fi?” Aren’t we here at least partly out of protest for George Lucas screwing around with the original Star Wars trilogy by adding scenes and updating special effects? Why then, if we are so concerned about the “classic” trilogy, why do we encourage the very same thing from the “modern” trilogy? As it stands, Lucas has made edits to both of his other prequels for their DVD releases. Unless I’m mistaken, the theatrical version of Attack of the Clones no longer exists.

I am by no means a prequel fan and whole-heartedly agree that they could use some serious work from the ground-up! But isn’t it rather hypocritical of us to tell George to leave some of his movies alone but to alter others? Are we really interested in preserving movies, or are we just interested in preserving Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi and letting all other movies be poked and prodded at while we turn a blind eye?

The main problem with your question is that in the prequal trilogy Lucas has merely finished and re-inserted scenes into the DVD that were only cut from the theatrical release because of running time constraints, I don't think you'll find too many people complaining about the content of what's been added to the prequal DVD's,apart from the fact that it makes a slow moving film even longer.

Whereas the original trilogy stood as they did in everyone's mind for 20 odd years before George started tinkering with them adding silly slapstick sight gags and new things in and changing existing scenes, with mixed results, and if it wasn't for a cock-eyed Rodian quick-shooter he might have gotton away with it. I don't think you'll find many fans unhappy that an original Biggs scene was resurrected (even if it doesn't quite work without the missing Tatooine /Biggs footage) however with the Jabba scene in A New Hope, Lucas was trying to salvage a scene that was unfeasible at the time and redundant because it's effectively covered in the Han /Greedo exchange. Every other change to the trilogy was added in hindsight once Lucas saw what his crew at ILM could do with a few pixels.

good point, but then again i have never been against lucas changing HIS movies the way HE sees fit, so you could say that from my pov it doesnt really matter what he does.

you know I may not agree with everything GL has done, and you're right 'they are his movies to do with as he pleases' and while I will always prefer the original versions to the special editions, I must admit that I'm always keen to see what new 'so-called' improvements have been made, sometimes he get's it right, mostly he get's it wrong, but at least it lets me see the films 'from a certain point of view!' in a fresh way, and to be honest as long as he keeps the original version always available he can tinker away at his special editions until the cows come home.

you know i tend to dissagree with you there, i would say that most of the time lucas gets it right, but when he is wrong MAN HE IS WRONG. so i say all power to him, just admit when you are wrong thats all.

All that having been said, as bad as they are, and even though I'm re-editing the PT, I still want to preserve the theatrical versions (because AOTC and probably ROTS will not be available in the original version.)

If there was ever a halfway decent excuse for downloading a movie so close after its release date, then that's it. To preserve the theatrical version that will be lost when the video release comes out.
