I’ve been pondering whether the Death Star trench plot in ANH might have been intended to be anecdotal of Luke Skyhopping on Tatooine - and how those experiences indirectly equipped him for the battle of Yavin. You see this sort of thing alot in movies, and its a great way to sometimes make a convoluted victory seem believable (superhero films use it loads).

So - WHAT IF the intended (I assume it was intended) parallel between pod racing/space battle could be made more direct?

The pivotal point of the battle is Anakin flying into the droid control ship, and blowing up the reactor. Could this be made to seem more deliberate - and more believable? WHAT IF Anakin was to win the pod race by tactfully flying through a narrow alternative tunnel to slip past Sebulba? No idea how, but it might work?
