Back to the Future "Johnny B. Goode" video w/deleted scenes (Released)

(UPDATE 9/21/17: If you have any questions about this video please send me a PM.)

I just discovered this on youtube, though I have vague memory of seeing it on TV back in '85:
It’s the official music video for Johnny B. Goode and it contains some very interesting deleted shots of Michael J. Fox, most notably an exchange at the end where he appears to coin the term
“rock 'n roll.”

A few people have uploaded this video (from the same source), but this one seems to be the earliest upload:
https://youtu.be/d4Cr7kxjSBs (EDIT-found an earlier upload)

Does anyone know if this video had any sort of official release on any home video version of BTTF?

It would have been great if they’d released the Johnny B. Goode scene uncut along with the other deleted scenes on the Blu-ray. 😕

I don’t recall this one at all. The Huey Lewis video was in heavy rotation at the time. That looks like it aired on one of the music video shows that competed with MTV before exclusivity deals killed them off.

I’m thinking it’s from “Friday Night Videos” which I think aired on NBC back when Letterman was only on 4 days a week.

I’m surprised none of that extra footage (especially the end) was ever in any of the BTTF documentaries, although I haven’t seen the new ones on the 2015 blu-ray release.

That was my first thought, as the text font is familiar, but it doesn’t sound like the FNV announcer I remember and can be heard in clips on youtube. Maybe it’s from Night Tracks which aired on TBS?
The Los Angeles market had two local music video shows I know of that often played stuff MTV didn’t. Other large cities may have had something similar?

I remember Night Tracks-- that could be it.

The NY area had a show called “New York Hot Tracks” hosted by Carlos DeJesus that showed Top 40, but mostly R&B/Funk stuff…a lot of Prince (lots of clips on youtube).

Have you seen the new documentary material from the 2015 BTTF blu-ray release? I have the 2010 one, but I’m just curious if that “rock n’ roll” bit ever made it into any of the newer documentaries. You can see how when they shot it they may have been thinking that it kind of dovetailed the earlier scene in the film when Marty blows up the amp.

Haven’t seen it.

Where are all the BTTF completeists? 😛

Anyhow, I did a bit of digging to see if I could find a promo copy of the video on cassette (vhs or 3/4" u-matic or whatever) and I found out that there were a couple of video subscription services in the 1980s, one called Telegenics and one called Rockamerica (who knew?!) Apparently, the video was released on both of these.

I found a guy who has the original tapes and trades dvd-r copies, but he hasn’t emailed me back yet and I don’t know if I’m going to hear from him.

In the meantime, I found a couple of places where you can supposedly download the video–I don’t know about the quality but they’re apparently also sourced from the subscription tapes. I don’t know if this is legit, but if anyone wants to give it a shot…(I’d do it myself but I don’t know much ‘bout this downloadin’ stuff LOL):

I’ll post again if I hear from that guy.

They didn’t get their parents together at the Enchantment Under The Sea dance I guess? 😉

There were also video jukeboxes back in the day, although I never saw one in my neck of the woods. Not sure what format they used.

There was also a Laserdisc based system I saw in music stores and some department stores with music sections. A flat touch sensitive pad with pictures of current albums allowed you to select a music video from each album. The selection was changed every few months. Not sure what year that began, but the discs turn up on Ebay.

Some guys I knew back in college put together a music video show and wrote letters to the music labels and got boxes of U-matic tapes in return. Can’t recall if any of the big labels sent tapes. The show never went anywhere beyond the pilot as the teacher in charge of the tv station wanted more effing talk shows.

😄
Yeah, I came across some of the LDs on eBay.

I remember those video jukeboxes—so 1980s. Kids today don’t know what they’re missing. 😉 I think they were LD-based. There weren’t too many of them around (expensive, I guess). I think I saw them once or twice in a restaurant or bar.

Looking around on Ebay and Rockamerica was still around well into the DVD era. Lots of listings to go through though.

Well, I have at least one lead now. If I’m able to get a dvd-r copy, I’ll enlist some help to upload it properly (assuming it’s better than what’s already up there).

All three download links on the site you posted require a premium subscription.

“Silence, Earthling! My name is Darth Vader. I am an extra-terrestrial from the planet Vulcan!” - Calvin “Marty” Klein

Yeah, I thought maybe there was a way to get around that, but it didn’t work. Sorry. If I find any alternative links, I’ll post them.

BTW, do these sites generally have a good reputation, or not? (FBoom.me, Publish2.me, Keep2share.cc)

Yes. I’ve downloaded many music videos from them.

Do you mind if I add this info to the thread “deleted scenes from films found in other films or TV shows”

It is only for information purposes and creating an archive.

Very cool find! I hope you can get a decent copy of it…

Can you get a list of what else he’s got? They might have other movie related music videos.

Most of these guys archived their tapes and edited each video into a file. Now they just sell the files as compilations

GOT IT! The video quality isn’t perfect, obviously, but it’s 100 times better than that smeary Night Tracks/youtube upload.

This version is longer—the Night Tracks version was obviously edited:
EDIT:(DELETED BY GOOGLE!)

I personally think this video is priceless for BTTF fans.

I’ll need some assistance going forward…

The video was deleted! Maybe try Vimeo?

😛 YouTube sucks ever since Google took over. Why didn’t they delete the other 26 million Johnny B. Goode videos?!

Ok, it’s up on Vimeo for the time being (the actual video looks a tad better; there’s a bit of compression here, but you get the idea):

If anyone has any questions about this video, please send me a PM.

Aside from the “lost” footage, someone could drop in shots from the full frame DVD and restore a good chunk of it.
