Hey Mike,

Just got to say that after reading the interview with you, and having a look around your new site, I have to say I'm impressed even further. (Already was with your R2 animation and the work you've done so far on Star Wars)...

You seem to have carved out a nice nieche for yourself.

Oh, and also the World is Watching short was nicely directed... fine work!

Thanks... I'm eager to return to the ANH restoration, but had some bills to pay...

Seeing RotS really reminded me of how important it is to preserve the films that didn't suck. And hey, did anybody notice the beautiful, OT-style starfield at the top of RotS? Somebody's listening...

He's done that twice, to my knowledge.

Huh? There's non-SE versions floating around? For god's sake there's 70 000 people on that petition! Didn't it occur to any of them that it might be easier in the end to cat-burgle one of those prints, do a Lowry style clean up on it and get to work? Jeeze! Somebody get a hold of them fast!
VADER: Let me look on you with my own eyes...

LUKE: Dad, where are your eyebrows?

The AFM screening, for one, was not in posession of a print. They requested one for the screening and were told that only an SE version would be made available. They were only interested in screening the film they were honoring, which was the original version of Star Wars. So they pulled the screening.

Good for them, I say.

Mike, sorry if this has been addressed before but I only scanned the thread quickly.

On the site you mention that the STAR WARS logo recedes too quickly on the DVD - first of all, thanks for pointing that out because I would never have noticed it otherwise.

You replaced it with the receding logo from one of the foreign angles. Did it bother you that it doesn't seem to be from the same source? The lack of curve on the top of the ST, for example, and the sharpness of the curves... it bothered me enough to interpolate new frames rather than borrowing from another angle. I can post some screenshots later tonight but you probably already know what I mean.

Edit: this animted gif shows the difference between the two logos. The slightly larger one is the "original".

Not only that, but the Star Field changes.

The Jedi are all but extinct.......

Not only that, but the Star Field changes.

That's partly to do with where I got the "original" frame from. It's actually from my retimed sequence, which used a static star plate. The original original sees the starfield change ever so slightly over time.

My retimed sequence, incidentally, was made to match the ESB pull back, not the OT ANH pull back, simply because it was easier to rip the ESB DVD than capture the OT ANH VHS. I made graphs of the logos' sizes over time and came up with a wacky formula to map one onto the other. Here's part of the C code, if anyone's interested:

m=1+sqrt(sin(PI*x*(1.0/290))); // first half
n=2.25-x*(1.0/290)*1.25;
nw=(sqrt(x*1.0/290)+(x*1.0/290))*0.5;
mw=1-nw;
k=mw*m+nw*n;
xt=(float)x/k;

At this time, I'm focusing my efforts on the one, true original that started it all. I'm ecstatic with the look of things so far, but I'll wait until I'm finished to think about ESB and ROTJ.

Believe it or not, I missed this one! I'll have another look, but I've done this logo in Illustrator already, so it wouldn't be difficult to just redo the recession myself... Good eye!

Like what the X0 project is doing for OOT restoration, I'd love to see what the two of you could do on a joint project of cleaning up every goof, gaffe, production misstep, old rotoscoping, junk matting, etc. I know there's a lot of crossover between the two projects, but the work that you both have pointed out is stunning. I've learned a lot from both of you because of your willingness to share info in these public forums.

Okay, enough gushing.

Gushing is allowed here on OT.COM. Most of us are here because of it.

This project should be combined with an O-OT restoration, to completely clean up and smooth out any technical flaws in the movies but also remove all of the lesser well done "SE" enhancements

I've spoken to Mike before, and we have swapped some info and stuff, but it really is his baby, and he has explained it all ad nauseum.
But, he benefits from stuff pointed out here (like the recent 'Star Wars' logo info) and other OT projects benefit from stuff he points out.
So information *is* freely traded, and there is enough info around for any of us to incorporate (or not) into our own projects. I'm glad Mike continues to share his findings, and that is why we share ours, as between the OT community it adds to the information available for us all to utilise.
I'm looking forward to the update.

Come on, Mike! There hasn't been an update in nearly half a year! I know everyone is extremely interested in seeing the progress you've made. Bring on the massive update! Bring on the massive update!

Personally, I don't really care about this project because it's something the rest of us will never get to see. I'm much more interested in the X0 project because it will actually be released.
