Ranking the Star Wars films — Page 95

I remember really enjoying Caravan Of Courage, and Ewoks: The Battle For Endor, as a kid. I don’t know how I would feel about them now.

As for the Holiday Special, the only way I could watch that is with the Rifftrax Commentary.

I’ll never be able to make it through that.

I assume 9 is the movie, which I’ve never seen but supposedly sucks.

You may be right; and in that case, I agree.

Yep, I’m not going to rank the TV show in a thread meant for theatrical movies.

Not enough people read the EU.

ESB = Master
Star Wars = Jedi
Rotj = General
TFA = Jedi
RO = General

What in the hell is this? Does Jedi trump General and if so why is TFA below ROTJ?

My ranking:
★★★★★

  1. The Empire Strikes Back DESPECIALIZED
  2. Star Wars DESPECIALIZED
  3. Return of the Jedi DESPECIALIZED

So you like despecialized movies more than the actual originals? Huh.

I certainly like watching them over any official version. The picture and sound quality is miles ahead of the official product and the SE changes have been erased to the point that I can’t tell they were ever there.

I’m not talking about versions or what is out there but what the movies actually are. It’s like saying my favorite movies are The Terminator Special Edition DVD and Terminator 2 Skynet Edition. When ranking films it’s odd to see them specifically categorized as despecialized versions and not actually the movies that were actually made.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

The special editions changes throw off the tone for me. I consider them to be completely different movies.

I don’t think that’s what he’s getting at. It’s weird that you choose a specific unofficial preservation rather than just saying “the theatrical cuts”.

ROTJ had some of the best character development in OT. While Han’s character development in ESB was great, I think Luke’s and Vader’s character developments in ROTJ were even a level above that.

I disagree. The Luke/Vader arc was great, but it was the only significant arc in the film. The other characters were just going through the motions, shells of their former selfs. TESB had great arcs for all the main characters. Every character was in a very different place personally at the end of the second installment from where they started off. This puts TESB miles ahead of ROTJ in the character development department.

Different place in terms of character? Not entirely true. For example, Luke does not actually change much in ESB. He is still this enthusiastic and reckless guy as he was at the beginning. He leaves Yoda’s training pretty much the same person (recklessly nonetheless). Leia again does not change much besides finally revealing her feelings to Han. The only one with a significant change is Han’s character. It is unfortunate that Lucas made Leia proclaim her love to Han already in ESB. I think iff he would leave that for ROTJ, those two character could be used way better in ROTJ.

In ROTJ Luke becomes completely different person compared to ANH and ESB. Same goes for Vader. While Vader was likeable and badass in ANH and ESB, he was pretty one dimensional. In ROTJ his character get a lot of depth and becomes very interesting. Even Leia and Han actually get development in ROTJ and are considerably different compared to ANH and ESB. While it might be a development you do not like but it is still a considerable development.

Anyway, I did not say ROTJ is overall the best in terms of character development. I just said that Luke’s and Vader’s character development are individually better than anything seen in ANH or ESB.

Luke doesn’t change much? Seriously? You throw out a pretty part of the story. I think this guy…

…has a very different perspective on life, than this guy:

The gap between what impscum considers truth and the actuality of the situation is probably the largest gap this side of a certain politician whose name starts with “T” and ends in “rump.”

As so many rank the ewoks movies:

Am I the only one who would love the idea of a third Ewoks movie? This time properly done with a certain ET vibe to it. It could even be a remake or a best of of the existing movies.

“People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians”

“In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.” --George Lucas on March 3, 1988

I didn’t even make it two minutes into the Ewok movies. They’re almost as unwatchable as the holiday special for me.

You are unable to differentiate between current state of the character due to some external “disturbance” and actual change/development of character. That scene is just Luke still being shocked due to the reveal and due to trauma related to his damn limb being cut off. So what exactly are the actions and dialogue he makes after that scene that indicate any difference (within ESB of course)? In the one scene that is left after that one I do not see any change of character.

The despecialized version is the best version I have access to at this time. I only have the theatrical on VHS and of course the GOUT DVDs.

Move 8 to 6 and push the others down and I’m on board.

Although fanedited I’d put tpm and rots just above rogue one.

I’ve fixed the titles (I’ll never understand why people use the numbers only for I-II-III whereas V-VI-VII have one since their original theatrical release…).

That’s being said, move 3 and 4 to 7 and 8 and I’m on board 😉

No you didn’t. The official legal names are Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That’s how they are officially registered. The episode numbers for the prequels is a Lucas thing.
