Lucas is way off....time will tell....

I've been reading this stuff about what Lucas is saying about the under 25 and over 25 crowds and which trilogy they prefer, so I have to chime in on this.

My opinion only here!!!

The PT will not stand the test of time. Maybe the FX will, but the stories and the movies themselves will not.

Here's how I think this....

I was 6 when ROTJ came out back in 1983. Thanks to my Dad buying bootleg copies of SW and ESB, I was definitely prepared for ROTJ when it came out. I watched those two movies endlessly....easily 50 or 60 times in the year to a year and a half before ROTJ, so I consider myself every much part of the original SW generation. Now when ROTJ came out, I LOVED it. I thought it was the most awesome one yet. Better than SW and ESB combined. It was just the shiznits, man.

Now....fast forward about 9 years. It's early 1992 and Star Wars has faded...now a distant, relished memory. I'm 15 years old and I want to watch the movies again, but those old bootleg Beta copies went by the wayside somehow. So I saved up some allowance for a few weeks and bought all 3 on fresh VHS tapes. I watched them and was enthralled. It was like I was REALLY seeing them for the first time. SW just riveted me, but when I got to ESB...that was when the greatness of this story really hit me. These weren't just movies, these were epics of the grandest scale. ESB got under my skin the most. I must have watched it 20 times.

But...

Something happened when I got to ROTJ. It felt strange....like something just wasn't right. I immediately saw how silly the Ewoks were and how anti-climactic Boba Fett's death really was. But it did have a lot there that was great. The duel at the end was powerful (as was the music), even though it still pales in comparison to the duel from ESB. ROTJ is a good Star Wars movie, but I got the sense back then that it could have been a hell of a lot better.

My point here is this....when I saw ROTJ at age 6, I thought it was the greatest ever. When I "rediscovered" the trilogy, I was older and realized the greatness of SW and ESB, but also saw the weaknesses of ROTJ.

I think that as the years go by, the PT will not stand the test of time and anyone who thought it was awesome and great will revisit it again and see the weaknesses and wasted potential.

Or, even more sad, if people revisit the PT they'll just not care about them any more than they care about whatever 'blockbuster' effects-laden film du jour is currently in theaters. There's really nothing in them that's special in any way nor makes them stand out from any other over-hyped summer movie that the studios are churning out, IMHO.

In fact, given that we're going into Memorial Day weekend with a Adam Sandler film (an audience fave) and a computer animated family film (Madagascar), I predict that ROTS will do ok at the boxoffice but probably not top the weekend. My guess will be Madagascar, followed by a very close tie between ROTS and 'The Longest Yard'. General audiences have had their SW fix and will move on... as the media has done already this week.

That very well may be the case. It would be extremely said. Then it will just be us talking on boards like this about the glory days of Star Wars.

Shit.....now I'm depressed. Thanks a lot man!!!

Boba Fett didn't die.

Read Tales From Jabba's Palace.

But yeah, I agree with you.

Boba Fett didn't die.

I know in the books he lived....but I have read a few and like a few and I think the EU should never have been done at all.

However, there are some great ideas in the EU that I wouldn't mind seeing in the movies.

Like Boba Fett....he should have been given a more interesting death....so, I think it would have been awesome to have seen the Sarlacc blown up and out flys Boba. Then, him and Luke go at it where Luke takes him out.

I believe that was from the Bounty Hunter Wars books. Very cool idea.....and would have kicked ass on screen.

Imagine the people in the theater!!! He fucking blew up the damn thing from the INSIDE?!!?!?!?

Boba was cool going into ROTJ, but that would have raised him to godhood...even if he dies.

I'm not holding my breath.

If he turns it over to someone else....maybe...just maybe there a chance in hell we might get some decent star wars before we all die.

But honestly....we're fucked.

A live-action TV series, set during the period of the Galactic Civil War... with Vader & Palpie still alive'n'kicking... some stories showing us the background of the war, not the usual Jedi-Skywalker-oriented stuff... like Rebel commando raids, Imperial Navy pursuing the Alliance running away from Yavin, smugglers & pirates, anti-imperial uprisings on some remote planets, action-packed space skirmishes like those we know from the old PC game "X-Wing".... all with that cold "look&feel" of Empire Strikes Back...

Is that too much to ask?

Why can't they do something like this? It's in their powers...

But no.... tell you guys, with this new TV series we should prepare ourselves for another STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL
I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

I tend to agree with your general sentiments. ROTJ was my favorite film when I was younger as well, but when I grew older, ESB became my favorite.

With regards to the PT, I think kids who grew up liking TPM will come to appreciate ROTS. the most, and this will be enhanced if they also happen to enjoy the OT even more. So your theory doesn't really hold. I understand though that you've gone to great pains to make sure that the OT is the only thing that matters, as do many posters here, but nostalgia can have a huge effect on experience. In the same way it has frozen many people's views of the OT into a kind of sacred text, the kids who had their indoctrination to Star Wars with the PT films (helped along by repeated viewings of the SE PT no doubt) will probably feel differently about the PT than you or even I do.

I'm a mainstream Star Wars fan exploring the extremes of Star Wars fandom. My views will no doubt be unpopular. I shall be kind and courteous in my postings, and I hope you will be too.

That would be really cool. The Jedi are awesome, but smugglers and bounty hunters and rebels and space pirates and gangsters all make for a much more exciting story. What I'd like them to do is take various characters who are famous, but don't appear in the movies (like Kyle Katarn or Dash Rendar) and show us some stories focusing around them. I don't want the entire series to focus on one story, I want to see several different stories with several different characters. I can hardly wait to see what they do with it, and I'm really crossing my fingers wishing they don't screw it up.

Dex...I get what you mean. Most of us are emotionally too close to the OT cuz of the memories we have associated with it. I've tried to look at the PT objectively, but I just don't see the appeal there. I see the potential though.

We are probably missing the point altogether....we should be viewing all the films as one film. Lucas has said this time and time again.
Future generations will probably count it as one whole movie, but we, at this time, are just being partial.

I think some of the PT will stand the test of time. The caring for the characters is there in Revenge of the Sith. Everything seems to click and you get a wonderful film. I think the characters of Qui Gon and Darth Maul are interesting enough for people to atleast enjoy TPM enough to watch it occasionally. AOTC, the verdict is still out.

It all depends on what GL does with them. If he brings them back out, SE's them and gets the editing RIGHT in the first two prequels, I think they can be really great films. Insert more of Maul's scenes back in, cut down on Jar Jar and remove the childish reactions of Anakin, and they will stand up without question.
The Jedi are all but extinct.......

Actually, I think I prefer TPM to AotC. In TPM, we get to see Maul and Qui-Gon, and they're both awesome. I wish Darth Maul had a bigger roll and did more, but he's still probably my favorite Sith. In AotC, it's just a lot of boring crap with... really, no good parts. The Jedi battle at the end is pretty cool... Seeing hundreds of Jedi fighting. But really, I think the whole Boba Fett and Jango Fett thing completely screwed AotC.

Maul has a few more extensions of most of his scenes that I would like to see included. I'd also like to see Jar Jar cut down, so that Qui Gon's character isn't such a HUGE contrast when they are on screen together. TPM COULD be a very good film, if edited correctly.

as sad as it is, revenge of the sith is still the number 1 movie at the box office. And the good thing for lucas is people who are not star wars fans are going to see it and actually like it. It's on track to be the biggest money maker in movie history making a hundred and seventy million just in the u.s. in it's first week, beating out return of the king and the all time grosser titanic. but i think hollywood analysts are wrong i'm predicting it will only take the 3rd spot. It would almost have to make a billion dollars to trump titanic.

The EU is aa part of the original story and doesn't contradict the movies.
The prequels DO contradict the movies.

Remember, when one is swallowed by the Sarlac one is digested over 1,000 years. Therefore it is possible, however improbable, to escape death.

Fine, mister Lucas, while you're at it why dont you replace Lando with will smith?
