Marcia Lucas Speaks!

Author
Time

This is a pretty monumental moment, since George likes to keep a close lid on Marcia’s involvement with the series, despite being the only Lucas to ever win an Academy Award for Star Wars. Nice to hear her voice for once and see her personality. If she was good at pointing out “Where’s Marion?” imagine what she could have contributed to the prequels. Hope she can conduct a more thorough interview in the future. Want to hear her opinion on the Special Editions.

Marcia Lucas!

I would love for her to do a convention or two for a Q+A session or a book about the Star Wars Trilogy. Now that Lucas is gone, she needs to have her story told.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

That was a really nice interview.

Love that Marcia called out the trench run as making no sense. That’s hilarious.

They weren’t talking about the entire trench run scene making no sense, but rather the specific moment where Han shows up in the trench, because as Marcia said there was no setup for that moment, but it still worked nonetheless.

I’ve always thought it works perfectly. No one in-story has any reason at all to expect it, so neither should we. It’s a genuine surprise to everyone - characters as well as audience.

Plus, there is a sort of set-up (whether Lucas intended it or not). Han is the only one who knows what he’s doing, not even Chewie knows. He may be giving us a hint when he says “I know what I’m doing”. To me, it feels like he may already have it in his mind to consider helping them.

However, true to his character he first secures Chewie, their pay, and their ship. He gets what’s important to him out of harm’s way and then makes the final decision to help from a position of relative safety - off of the target planet & base, away from the notice of the Empire.

No issues with that scene at all for me.

Oh yeah it totally works. I’ve never heard of anyone having a problem with it, and obviously that was one of the moments that received applause from the audience. It sounds like Marcia was just nervous initially about editing that sequence together, and wasn’t sure the audience would buy it without some sort of set up. She was a great editor and I think the editing during the entire death star attack is brilliant.

It makes no logical sense, as the station defenses were designed to repulse ships larger than fighters.

It would have been nice if we heard a thunderclap of the Falcon jumping from hyperspace close to the station (taking a risk that he warned Luke about earlier in the film) but then you would miss the ship coming out of the sun.

Maybe Ady could play around with the concept in his next iteration of the film. I think as cinema it makes sense but even in a fantasy context it’s putting the Mechina into the Deus Ex.

Sometimes you just need to put your technician hat down and trust the Force, I guess.

Good to see the entire series, and especially this one.

This appeared in my news feed earlier from Deadline:

The series will world premiere with the first Star Wars installment on July 12, 2022 at 10 p.m. ET on Vice TV.’

It is always interesting to hear Marcia Lucas speak as she did for the 40th anniversary interview in this thread, and at the Galactic Innovations event in 2019: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOxfmq0nCEs

Edit: Sorry. I didn’t know digitalfreaknyc had already created a thread for this documentary series:-

Icons Unearthed - new 6 part documentary on the OT (VICE)

The Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.

Thank you very much for bringing this new series to my attention! I watched the intro and I’m already hooked and it’s great to see Marcia be acknowledged, especially how she outright says that George pretended she didn’t even exist after their divorce. This series also seems to be conscious about utilizing the original versions of the films, as they used a clip of Sebastian Shaw as unmasked Darth Vader with his eyebrows fully intact.

Umm…there’s a whole thread about it 😉
