Ah, yes! From a business standpoint, I want to drop 4 billion on a franchise so I can make movies that are very remotely related and will alienate multiple elements from a fanbase and ensure my investment does not pay off. Sounds like a great idea! From a fan standpoint, I want to watch a series of movies that supposedly take place in the same universe as another series of movies, but without any references, nods, characters, or elements from the previously established series. That’s the sort of thing that helps me connect it to the films I already love! Sounds like a great idea!
Of course I understand that from a business perspective it makes total sense to keep drawing from the same well. This is a safe bet and an Obi Wan movie will make a billion dollars easily.
To your second point: I’m a Star Wars fan, but I want the exact idea that you’re mocking and I can’t possibly be the only one. I want a Star Wars movie without references or nods or recurring characters. Give me a fresh take on Star Wars, or at least a fresh take on a familiar character. Perhaps that’s what this movie will be, but something makes me doubt that.
Disney has an entire galaxy to flesh out and play with, but somehow we always end up back on Tatooine with the same cast of characters. And if I want to connect to the old Star Wars films that I already love, I’ll re-watch the old Star Wars films that I already love.
JEDIT: I loved Star Wars VII by the way. I’m not quite as cynical and joyless as Impscum or Alderaan 😉
