Wow. Talk about tine tuning the Battle of Hoth.

I still remember back when Adywan said he was going to do away with the AT-STs and have the sequence only showcase the AT-ATs. We were all like “NO! You can’t remove the AT-STs! This is their debut!”. Then he released the next preview for this edit and what do we get? AT-STs everywhere! And really good looking AT-STs! They fitted perfectly with the shots we were looking at! But how could they be incorporated into the Battle of Hoth in a meaningful way? Well when I started watching the edit, I had two OMG moments that I thought were brilliant.

  • That one shot of the Snowspeeder attempting to wrap the AT-ATs legs only to be shot down by an AT-ST escort. Really built up the idea that the battle for Hoth was going South for the Rebels since their plan to bring the walkers down was no longer viable.

  • Luke does a double kill! The moment I saw that AT-ST walking right beside the AT-AT walker, I kept thinking “Wait, is Adywan going to?” Than the AT-ST looks up at the now tipping AT-AT “Oh, god. He’s going to do it. It’s going to happen.” Than the AT-ST turns it’s head forward, goes into the immediate direction away from the AT-AT, but it’s too late. “CRASH! That was amazing!”. Seeing that AT-AT crush the AT-ST felt like it was a moment that truly belonged. It’s so Star Wars I’m amazed Lucas didn’t think of this himself. It also helps that this was more than a simple downing of an AT-AT since seeing it crush an AT-ST added much needed variety.

That was just awesome.
