ROTS: Incoherence ... (attention, a little bit of spoiler inside) — Page 2

For every French and Italian reader here: WHY did they re-named the characters in Star Wars? Did they sound like curse words?

Ricarleite: For the French version, I don't see any other reason than lack of foresight: no word sounds remotely near anything French, and like I said these errors do not reappear in ESB and ROTJ (I haven't seen the PT in French yet). They probably went for sounds that "fitted" for better lip-synch or something. Still funny, though!

Darth Sidious is INSIDIOUS
Darth Nihilus is Nihilistic
Darth Vader is Luke's Father
Darth Maul will MAUL you to death because he's a good fighter...

Stuff like that.

Interesting...where did you read this?

Where did I read it? I didn't read it, I extrapolated it from the facts.

I don't want to give too much away, but Nihilism fits very well with Darth Nihilus' theme.

Darth Sidious was obvioulsy insidious, what manipualting politics for 20 odd years to become evil dictator of the galaxy.

Vader = Father is pretty obvious.

Darth Maul is a bit of a stretch, I admit, but he is the most viscious fighter--taking on two Jedi at once and holding his own. Douku lost to a single Jedi who wasn't even in a fit of rage as ObiWan was when he killed Maul.

Uh, you mean, like, these?

Aah, totemo kawaii desu ne!

What's wrong with Leia's lips?

That's how Obi-Wan Kenobi would look like if he was part of the anime "Ranma 1/2"...

You gotta admit, that's pretty awesome... The manga version of the Yavin battle must be super cool...

That's how Peter Cushing would look like in "Akira"

I remember seeing the "Phantom Menace" manga here in 1999. I think the whole manga series is available on USA, since these are american editions (in english, flipped for left to right reading).

I own two of the Manga Star Wars. I love them. I was trying to decide between two issues of the Star Wars Manga or a big collection of various Star Wars TALES. I picked the Mangas. If you live in New York, you can just go to Midtown comics. That's where I got mine. Or, if you don't live in New York, you can jsut go to the Midtown Comics website and you should be able to find them under the Manga -> Dark Horse section.

In the portuguese version, Dooku is renamed Dookan (although he is referenced as Dooku on Clone Wars sometimes), and Sifo-Dyas was renamed to Zaifo-Vias, because both names sounded similar to curse words. Also, Panaka was not renamed, but he souds like "panaca", which means something like "jerk", "stupid", "idiot".

it was common at the time to "frenchise" the names; exemples in "new hope" novelization:
Han = Yan
Luke = Luc
Chewbacca = Chiktabba
Millenium Falcon = Millenium Condor
Darth Vader = Dark Vador (this being so popular in France stayed: Darth Maul = Dark Maul, same for Tyrannus, and Sidious)

but by the time of Empire Chewie gets his true name, the falcon is called "the falcon", but the names didn't changed for 3PO and R2 (except now 3PO is called "3PO" in the PT and "6PO" in the OT)

When I was a kid I thought his name was Dark Vader.

I also thought a lightsaber was a lifesaver.

Thought that the Emperor was the "Emporor" as a child.

Actually in ANH French, "R2-D2" is "D2-R2" (well if I remember well) and C3PO is Z6PO in all the French movies.
