From what I heard - and this is probably not very reliable - but this workprint wasn't leaked to a warez group by an industry insider in exchange for access to leet ftps full of porn and cracked software; it was stolen. By stolen I mean a proper, break in and take something without permission, sort of crime. And that's how the FBI got involved.

I don't know if that's true or not, but certainly this release didn't filter down through the usual route.

Anyway, that torrent site was one of the first to have it, and the FBI thought the administators of the site had something to do with the theft, or could help trace the thieves, and used that against them.

I must stress this is pretty conjectural.
