Personally I think the outrage is pretty premature. But the best I can tell there is at least one legitimate criticism of the concept (rather than the nonexistent execution). Essentially, the idea being that showing an alternate history where things are worse to some extent absolves the problems of the present (as opposed to a future story where things are worse, which would be a cautionary tale). Basically it’s a thing where you can point to it and say “look how much worse race relations could be, so don’t complain!”

  1. I have no idea if there is any intent whatsoever by the series creators to try to absolve the problems of the present or to say that people shouldn’t complain now. I have no idea as to what political positions the creators of the show hold.

  2. I don’t think the Nazi takes place in an alternative future.

  3. I am not sure understand what you are saying here

I think he’s trying to say that this show will belittle the problems of now by showing how much worse it could have been. It might read as trying to shut up people who have problems with race relations now.

Also, I’m not sure what the writers/directors intend matters here. It’s how it reads off to the viewer.

None of it matters. It’s a show so watch it or don’t.

Of course it matters—popular culture is a reflection of the “real world” and vice versa. I just happen to think the controversy in this case is overblown and premature, but things like this can matter in other cases.

Do they really know for certain that the Dolphins were engaging in homosexual sex?

They sent in a scientist dressed as a male dolphin and he reported back affirmatively.

I thought Dolphin sexuality had been well documented by now. The ones I saw in Vegas many years ago would drag pool toys around with their redacted. You never saw so many parents trying to avert their kid’s gaze.

I heard that Steve Dolphannon likes to blank his own redacted.

I am not understanding why this series seems to be so controversial and the Nazi show is not.

There are a LOT of people who, rightly or wrongly, consider the south/confederates to have been the good guys, and are no doubt worried that that they will be portrayed negatively. Virtually nobody thinks the Nazis were good, so there’s nobody around to worry about them being portrayed in a negative light.

I don’t think the people that are complaining believe that the Confederacy were the good guys. I think they believe just the opposite.

I did read a few years ago about a documentary on Civil War reenactors, who get in uniform and recreate battles. Some of those interviewed felt they were wrongly portrayed as pro Confederacy.

Very good news!

Booker Introduces Landmark Bill to End the Federal Prohibition on Marijuana

Followup:

http://thehill.com/homenews/345028-poll-finds-support-for-marijuana-legalization

Only 14% of people think that marijuana should be illegal. DAMN.

can all agree it should remain illegal for people under the age of 18? Can we also all agree that driving while high on marijuana should be illegal just like driving drunk is?

Of course, that’s obvious. I’d even say it should be illegal until you’re 21, since it can affect brain development if you use it while you’re still young.

People shouldn’t take vague “real world” implications of media into account when acting on a creative vision.
