I can understand how receivers might treat (technically out-of-spec) AC-3 2.1 as 2.0 and ignore the LFE, but it surprises me a bit that this happens with DTS-HD MA 2.1.

I had a look at MCR, and it supports LCR LFE 4ch (3.1f) in AC3.
Indeed, 2.1 is not an option, but I have a 2.1 AC3 supposedly off a pressed DVD, prolly a mistake.
Also, 2.1 DTSMA has been used for at least 2 TV series released on BD.
Why not make a “5.1” mix and keep the rears quiet? All the sound is left, right and bass.
What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

You can, but if you have a surround system/AVR you can’t upscale it, because it’s already surround. 2.1 is nice, cuz it’s stereo & AVRs can upscale 2 surround if you have it.
Not to mention the wasted bitrate/extra audio compression.
It wouldn’t be wasted, since apparently AC3 is smrt enuff to redistribute bits from quiet chans to louder chans.
Perhaps. Although you wouldn’t be able to use the matrix encoded surround that way as previously stated.

Why… just leave it as stereo if that is what you want. It seems the consensus of those who are most familiar with this is that either leave it as stereo or make a 5.1 mix. Anything in between is pretty pointless. I’ve taken that advice with my 77 surround mix by making the rear channels identical to match the 4.1/4.2 original, but I’m using the full 5.1 channels and not making a specific 4.1 mix which the specs say is perfectly acceptable. Oddballs like that just don’t play well on most systems.
To be clear, I’m not ASKING for one, I was just thinking out loud how to get a compatible 2.1 mix if someone wanted to tackle it. That’s all.

Use the 2.0 mix and turn up your subwoofer.

I concur.

Yeah, honestly a 2.0 track that’s properly dolby surround encoded can sound fantastic upmixed. Better even than a 5.1 ac3 track because each channel can have more bits to it. To me a 2.0 track that’s encoded with a high bitrate will sound much closer to a dts track than a 5.1 ac3 track. That’s just my ears though, some may not agree but to me discrete channels is whatevs, surround is an immersive effect and a little channel bleeding and a little dialogue bleeding into the front left and right channels don’t diminish the immersive effect one bit, but the compression artifacts of 5.1 channels crammed into an ac3 do. Ironically on my setup the 2.0 tracks even sound warmer and have more bass.
(My receiver has a really good sound for movies but oddly enough can’t do dts so I always transcode it to a dolby surround pcm instead of 5.1 dolby and it sounds better than a dolby digital track at 5.1 would)
