Return of the Pug (ROTP) - webpage and screenshots (Released) — Page 17

I just got CatBus’ PM about this, and have downloaded the file posted by Puggo. Since I’ve been rather swamped with work lately I might not get to it right away, but I will investigate this mono version for any possible differences to the stereo mix.

Without having heard any of it yet, it seems likely to me that it would be a separate mix, but with only minimal differences in content. If the other two movies are anything to go by, there might be a few minor discrepancies in which sound effects are included, but probably nothing particularly significant.

I haven’t gotten to do more than a very quick sampling but Han does say “Trust me” (original) instead of “I can see a lot better now” (SE) which indicates possibly this is derived from the Dolby Stereo master.

Different mixing levels sometimes reveal small dialogue details–this happened in the mono mix of Empire a lot, where the words at the beginning of sentences were buried in the stereo mix, but completely audible in the mono mix. I’ve only seen one case like that in Jedi, and it’s not very exciting:

When Jerjerrod says “I tell you, this station will be operational as planned.”, the mono mix reveals what’s either a stutter or a partially-enunciated “that” so that it sounds more like “I tell you, th-this station will be operational as planned.”

Not enough to even bother changing subtitles for, sadly.

Okay, I’m done. Aside from the clinking chain noises and the mixing levels Jerjerrod dialogue thing, to me it sounds pretty much like the 83 stereo mix with less dynamics. Maybe the Jerjerrod dialogue thing even qualifies as a “smoking gun”–present in ROTP and not in the 83 mix. If so: Worst. Smoking. Gun. Ever.

Hello there everyone! As some may remember, I GOUT synced the PSB 16mm soundtrack and I can confirm that there are actual pretty substantial changes made to the Mono mix in Empire. Off the top of my head:

“The first transport is away” line is different and plays a second later than in the stereo mix.

The hidden stormtrooper that shoots 3pO is differently voiced.

Yoda shrieks differently when Luke first points his blaster at him ("…like we’re being watched!").

There is added 3PO dialogue in the Carbon Freezing Chamber.

So unlike Jedi, which really just seems to be a re-leveled folddown, Empire is the real deal.

In any case I don’t mind GOUT syncing this latest 16mm mix for posterity’s sake. I already talked to Catbus about it but I’d just need the wav files from Puggo whenever he gets the chance…and I’m traveling it up until around the 20th of August. So don’t get too excited lol.

I haven’t started the doc yet, because when I started working on it, I realized that I can’t until I know which encode I’ve decided on. I’ve got four versions that I’m putting together, and with Silverwook’s help I’ll decide which one will finally be anointed as “ROTP”.

Just a suggestion, I’d say go dual-layer DVD, given the movie length and extra(s). But that’s just me. Can’t wait for ROTP!

Was thinking about the cover, but there don’t seem to be too many textless versions of the poster designs out there.

Why not go full surrealist?

How about this?

So, a new book came out and we learned so much, and it is called, “Anguilosaurus, Killer of the Living”.

I should have known someone would bring up those surreal European posters. 😉

The first one is like a '70’s cover of Heavy Metal magazine.

Is that supposed to be a Gamorian Guard? Kind of nightmarish where the rest of the image is at least somewhat on topic.

It’s whatever it was supposed to be when the artist hallucinated it. 😉

It’s clearly Luke. He’s holding a lightsaber. And badly, too–the nerve endings must have given out in his robotic hand.

Ok, that’s done. Re-tweaking a few things in each reel now. The encodes have so many tweaks now, that I expect about a day of computer time to render and encode, per reel. The computer is hard at work rendering reel 2 right now (I’m doing 2, then 3, then 1). So realistically, I should be able to start working on the doc late this week, or this coming weekend.

It’s turning out a bit better than I had expected. It’s also more work than I had expected 😃

Just a quick note to say that reels 2 and 3 are 100% done. Reel 1 is almost done… reviewing my encoding revealed a couple of necessary tweaks that should take me 2-3 hours. I’m out of town until Friday, so I will do these over the weekend.

I’m much happier now with how it’s turning out… this final version is really fun to watch. Reel 1 has been a bear, but I’m satisfied with how it looks now. The doc will explain everything in gory detail. The remaining tweaks are just to remove a couple of mouse droppings that I find overly distracting.

I stumbled across an old link to this project, and I’m stoked to see how close you’ve come Puggo! I’m really looking forward to this. With ESB Revisited’s release, and this completing the 16mm trilogy, we’re very spoiled for viewing options these days! Oh, and I have to say I’m really digging the full surrealist poster for some reason - I vote that as a cover, lol!

Just finished the doc. It’s 4 and a half minutes long and explains many of the things that went into making the captures a watchable film.
The doc doesn’t explain the basics of capturing, since that was covered in the PG and PSB docs.
Over the weekend I’ll build a test disc, and see if there is room for a second audio track.

Sounds great Puggo! Can’t wait to finish the collection!

Anyway I am back from vacation so if you have some spare time, could you send me the uncompressed audio for the GOUT sync project? Thanks!
