C-3PO is pretty irresponsible and has diarreah of the mouth, willing to surrender at any turn. R2, on the other hand, can be trusted with the friggin plans to the Death Star. I always wondered if Lucas would not wipe R2's memory and I'm glad he didn't. I've always figured that the story we know was preserved by R2. The threat of his memory being wiped by Owen threatens to do more than lose the Death Star plans.
