Yeah you get a slightly higher resolution while sacrificing the presentation of the film. I've compared the two before and found the speed up unbearable.

Hmm--- I agree---having said that PAL users here in Europe have become so used to the slightly faster speed that it's barely noticable unless as you say---you do a side by side comparison.

PAL VHS players that could be compatible with NTSC started to become prominent towards the end of the 90's----I have one myself----I also have a NTSC 1982/83 VHS 1st  release of SW(snapped up on ebay) aswell as the PAL equivalent.

And hands down---it's no contest---PAL all the way for me mate!

I saw Star Wars in 1977. Many, many, many times. For 3 years it was just Star Wars...period. I saw it in good theaters, cheap theaters and drive-ins with those clunky metal speakers you hang on your window. The screen and sound quality never subtracted from the excitement. I can watch the original cut right now, over 30 years later, on some beat up VHS tape and enjoy it. It's the story that makes this movie. Nothing? else.

BUMP

Because I think it's important and deserves to be on the first page, in fact I suggest it becomes a sticky.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

^^I concur.

I wish that I could just wish my feelings away...but I can't.  Wishful wishing can only lead to wishes wished for in futile wishfulness, which is not what I wish to wish for.

If I were the original films, I would definitely split-screen with you.

Fixed?

The original films know that frevious would just move on to a different obsession if he ever got what he wanted.  Mark my words, the three films would be found scattered across at least ten different states.

Maybe Dr. Lecter can help us out here.......

I don't experience any trouble with the page or his site, but the issue may have been solved since then of course.

I think your interpretation of this article's title is wrong.  The Library of Congress did not have it's Copyright application prints replaced.  The original prints given in the year of the films release are still there.

1977 - Star Wars : http://lccn.loc.gov/96512247
1980 - Empire Strikes Back : http://lccn.loc.gov/96512208
1983 - Return of the Jedi : http://lccn.loc.gov/96501520
1997 - Star Wars A New Hope Special Edition : http://lccn.loc.gov/97510343
1997 - Empire Strikes Back Special Edition : http://lccn.loc.gov/98502262
1997 - Return of the Jedi Special Edition : http://lccn.loc.gov/2006642053
1999 - The Phantom Menace : http://lccn.loc.gov/99468631
2002 - Attack of the Clones : http://lccn.loc.gov/2002636427
2005 - Revenge of the Sith : http://lccn.loc.gov/2005644161
2008 - The Clone Wars : http://lccn.loc.gov/2008636030

It was the copy that was given (maybe) in 1989 as part of the National Film Registry which could have possibly been swapped.  But I've been told conflicting reports, A: the swap story and B: the one where they never got a print in the first place.

I need to reach out to them again to find out what happened after ESB was included to the NFR a few years back.  Last time I got a reply they had not been given a print, but that was a month or two after the announcement, way too early.  Tried a year later but didn't hear back, need to try again.

I know that many have misinterpreted this article in the past but my interpretation of this story is in order, I was bumping it because the more people that sees it and knows about it the better.

I read about this a savestarwars.com.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

I didn’t find a better topic already so I’ll post here.

I asked our national film institute about SW prints if they have any and I actually got pretty good info. They have two copies from SW that date before the 90s and at least one of them doesn’t have “ANH” in the beginning and colors are supposedly great, so they’re assuming it’s in Technicolor. They don’t have TESB at all but they do have four prints of ROTJ. Naturally they all are probably subtitled. Anyways, thought I shared this info with you. Would be interesting to hear from other countries do they still have copies.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Well that’s good news that they have two copies from before the 90’s of Star Wars. Did they specify which prints ROTJ was? But it’s unfortunate that they don’t have a copy of ESB.
Anyways thanks for checking in on that.

I’m assuming ROTJ ones were original, too, as we were talking only about the originals (well, at least I was, and they probably figured that out).
