Chris Crispy gets called a fatass

and he deserves its. Because him and the state legislature could not come to an agreement on the budget, Christie shut the state down. This included state parks that contained beaches. It closed down right at the 4th of July holiday. He was seen relaxing at a beach that was closed to the general public. Fuck him.

That’s the beach in front of the governor’s summer residence, which technically he has access to as it’s “his” house, but that he still doesn’t get how bad it looked or even faked an apology proves that he’s a jackass of high quality.

exactly.

I don’t think there is any way that any of us can truly know whether or not we are color blind.

Well, I’m not 100% sure what to think of it, but this kind of test is quite interesting™.

Can we please stop discussing US politics in this thread. If we all just tried to be countryblind the world would be a better place.

Speaking of hahahahaha, this is a great headline.

I should point out that this is from the NY Post editorial board, a pro-Trump outfit that endorsed him for the GOP nomination.

(Our former colleague Kyle Smith put it nicely: “Don Jr. is why Nigerian email scammers keep trying their luck.”)

Everything about everything reminds me how amateur and, um, childish, the Trump approach to everything is. Completely unfit to be in charge of anything in my opinion.

I read that Kyle Smith quote to my wife last night and she was still laughing about it this morning.

That article is also defending Trump Jr. It’s the same argument that meant Trump Jr didn’t get arrested for provably soliciting campaign donations from foreign nationals and governments… because people helpfully wrote it off as him being an idiot. Being called an idiot is always better than being jailed for treason.

I do.

I’m not sure why people are so worked up about it though. To me, it just looks like one of those poster-bound inspirational quotes.

I think it’s a bit more nuanced. Scientists never claim to “know” the answer, they admit that they could be wrong and that the current state-of-the-art is really just a strong belief. It is religion that claims to “know” the answer. Faith is assuming something is right - belief is thinking that something is right, but realizing that it might not be. The latter is closer to science.

It’s still an odd definition. I’m not sure why “solving the problem” is in there, and science is much more than belief - it’s belief with a systematic basis for that belief.

Could someone explain to me the problem with this tweet? Apparently people on Twitter are angry about it.

“Science is the belief you can solve the problem.” --@BillNye #MondayMotivation

Mostly it’s a weird definition. Science is a methodology for learning about things. Problem-solving may use science, but it’s much more subjective.

i.e. Global warming. Science just says such-and-such species will likely go extinct, such-and-such areas will likely dry up and be uninhabitable for humans, and so on. It could even say (although it doesn’t) that humans will likely go extinct, or that the Earth will become a barren space rock. But science does not say that any of this would be a problem. Saying that any of this is a problem is a value judgment–ethical, moral, human. But it’s not science. Actually solving problems is a tricky mix of science, engineering and other human factors like ethics, economics, logistics, and law.

Science just helps us learn stuff so that we can identify things we consider to be problems. It doesn’t identify problems. Science helps us learn stuff so that we can solve problems, but it’s far from the only factor in problem-solving.

I’d say it would be more accurate to day “Science is the method that allows us to know things.”, but that doesn’t rate very high on the motivational poster scale. “Belief” was probably the thing that set the most people off, though. It’s not a belief, it’s a method. And the method works whether you believe in it or not, although you do still need to do it right.

I don’t even understand what there is to be offended about.

I’m not offended. I’m frustrated and pissed off.

Luckily for you, this issue doesn’t affect you. Or at least, it only affects you because you’re letting it. A black dude getting beat up by a cop doesn’t have a choice about it affecting him.

with that said, I am done with this conversation.

I expect better of you, Warbler.

You’re right. I’m sorry. I apologize to everyone, especially Frink.

I lost my temper. I’m just sick and tired of attitude I get from certain people whenever racism comes up. I’m sick and tired of being treated like the enemy in these debates.

It’s fine.

But you always take these discussions way too personally. And as I’ve tried to say several times, every white male has white male privilege, not just you. And just because you have white male privilege doesn’t mean you’re racist.
