Wow… you really do a lot of color grading!

To be honest, I think every color grading project one here is great.

Here’s the complete set of regrades thusfar, representing my interpretation of the technicolor print color timing in the best light, based on scans of technicolor prints, and the visual inspection of a large set of technicolor print frames:

It’s interesting that a “simple” color correction can “restore” a lot of details

So is your next step to take these sample frames and use your algorithm to grade the rest of the bluray?

Also, is that shot of Han out of focus?

I’m actually in the process of color grading a scan for the project, which shall not be named. These represent the colors of that corrected scan, although they will be slightly brighter for the scan, since that source doesn’t suffer from black crush, and should thus look closer to this:

When that is finished, I may consider regrading the bluray in it’s entirety, if there’s enough of an interest.

The shot of Han is out of focus on the bluray and on 35mm prints.

Here’s two shots from the Death Star escape sequence from reel 4:

I’m a fan Dre, and can’t wait to see what form this work takes.

I recently went on that History of Film ride in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and at the end they have a clip show of all these classic, cultural staples of film. All were beautifully restored, but every so often it would cut to that damn purple muddy transfer of Star Wars.

The best way to describe Dre’s version at the moment is that it looks like what I’d imagine would appear on that ride.

Brightness is still an issue for the bluray, as black crush prevents using the proper settings. Here are the same frames with the in my view correct brightness settings for a home video release:

I’m wondering whether pushing the brightness up may be pushing it a bit. A comparison to the GOUT reveals, that the original “darker” version is already quite a bit brighter than the GOUT, while having similar shadow detail.

GOUT:

DrDre (“dark”):

In light of this, I think I prefer the first version.

Here’s a slight update of the regrade, where I’ve reduced the yellow a bit in the Tatooine shots:

I like that a lot better.

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

Nice!!! Can’t wait to see the entire film this way. I’m beginning to wonder what green tint Mike Verta was talking about. These have more red rather than green.
