TITANIC 35mm Preservation! (a WIP) — Page 4

Didn’t read through the entire thread. Great for a movie that’s 64 years old. Unless if it’s for the overrated 1997 James Cameron movie, consider me not interested.
Yes, the 1953 TITANIC and A Night to Remember are far better compared to Cameron’s borefest.

This thread is about the 11-Oscar winning 1997 film.

Didn’t deserve those Oscars. Would rather have TRUE LIES, Cameron’s last great movie, as a 35mm preservation.
Color me uninterested and the thread title needs to be updated.

Wow…

No shit…

Hell, being honest here too, I’d rather watch Raise the Titanic AGAIN compared to this bullshit. Even 20 years later.

No, ‘wow’ as in you are shitting on yet another thread just because it is about a movie which “colors” you uninterested. Just like every other time you complained because something isn’t encoded to your standards or isn’t uploaded the way you would do it. There are better, more polite ways to offer your opinions and might actually benefit the community if you began to employ a few of them.

On an unrelated note, True lies is a great movie. To the OP, sorry for derailing your thread a bit…good luck with the project.

Some people need to get hobbies and get off their holier-than-thou high horse over a movie.

Titanic (1997) is completely overrated, IMO. The Blu-ray disc release isn’t good enough for you rabid fans?
Typing more about James Cameron, really hoping the Avatar sequels go shit at the box office.

Given the long lines for the Avatar rides that opened recently at Disney’s Animal Kingdom park in Orlando, I think there’s still a bit of interest.

And no more thread crapping.

I’m such a rabid fan I’ve only watched this movie once and find the thought of a 35mm print scan a curiosity and nothing more. Can’t get any more rabid than that!

Haha I’m in the same boat as SpookyDollhouse - I’ve only seen this movie the whole way through 1 time…a few random scenes when it’s been on TV but only 1 complete viewing. Just thought it be excellent to watch a film scan of it.

To those of you in the east coast of the USA who are interested, there is a “free” 35mm screening of the film at New York City’s School of the Visual Arts Theatre.

The movie will be screened on 35mm film.

Synopsis: A seventeen-year-old aristocrat falls in love with a kind but poor artist aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic.

Titanic is rated PG-13, and some material may be inappropriate for children under the age of 13. Children under the age of 5 will not be admitted.

… And come early to enjoy virtual reality and music video experiences in the lobby.

Edit:
From the look of it, the theatre doesn’t look bad

Hi all,

My name’s Dale and I’ve literally just signed up on OT.com, so I could comment and join in on this discussion about this TITANIC preservation project - what a bloody marvelous project it is! I’ve just this evening seen the preview video, and cannot get over how fantastic it looks.

I actually really rather enjoy the little bits of dirt, specks of dust and such that are present (I’ve also just seen the footage from reel 10, with those few little flaws on the frames). Would it be possible to release an uncleaned, raw version as well? I do hope this isn’t presumptuous of me - I’m honestly grateful that this project is even happening…I’m one of the rabid Titanic fans, mentioned above 😛 I’ll own it!

I’ve been collecting individual 35mm film cells from this release (pre-2012) for years, 5 frames per strip, so it’d be a TREAT to see this entire film released as a fan preservation project, with colour corrections and cleaning up done to match the actual physical film frame colours.

I’ve also done a quick frame size comparison, from the reel 10 sample and the Blu-Ray…I’m just not sure how to insert an image here! But it looks like we’ve got a bit more information, image-wise on this project which is great!

That’s awesome - a FREE event!! If you go let me know how the projection compares to the scan, I’m particularly interested in the dark details and the colour temperature. I saw a Fox print recently that appears to show more details in the shadow than the US print, it could be that acetate-base prints have more shadow detail over polyester. Or it could be that the preview file doesn’t do full justice to the scan itself.

Glad to have you here.

The release will have pretty minimum work done.

I’d rather you didn’t buy film strips from cutters as they destroy prints. A lot of them come from trailers and not prints (thankfully), but I would love to be able to scan the July-release trailer if we can find one. 😃

Have you edited out the end of the scene with Rose and Cal discussing the Mauritania comparison with the Titanic? Right after “luxurious”, a whole piece is missing that’s on the Blu-ray. Cal talks to Rose’s mother and makes his guy taking care of their lugage, and then the whole family embarks. Your sample cuts right after “luxurious”. That’s odd.

Yes, it’s a preview file I cut it.

Ah yes, the 5-minute Sho-West trailer is a gem - so many alternate shots in that one, I love it! WOuld be swell to have an actual high quality scan of it - if I’m correct it has only been relesased digitally on the special edition DVD’s a few years ago?

Here’s my photobucket link to the comparison I mentioned in my first post - I’m not sure how to share the image directly here on the forum though??

Here are the comparison shots; Slightly different cropping, love the raw “filmy” feel to the scans. Marvelous.

The colours on the previews are not right. They should look somewhat warmer.
