Dominic Monaghan is an OOT fan!

So, I was watching the Tonight Show with Jay Leno tonight, and Dominic Monaghan was on (in case there are some people who don't know who that is, he played Merry in LOTR and he's Charlie on Lost). Anyway, Jay asked if he was a Star Wars fan and if he had seen ROTS. Dominic said yes, he's seen it and has problems with it, but he didn't want to go into them on the show "because it would take about 4 hours to explain". And then he proceeded to say that the thing that bothers him most about the new Star Wars stuff is the fact that Lucas made Greedo shoot first. There was absolutely NO audience response (I guess there weren't many hardcore OT fans there), but Dominic braved through the silence and continued to explain why it is so horrible that Lucas changed it. Jay then kinda made fun of him, saying he really shouldn't talk about that on a date or something. I just thought it was cool that he brought that up on national TV, and on his first ever appearance on the Tonight Show. He's a geek! OriginalTrilogy.com should send him a Congratulations card or something

A few years back I went to a preview screening of Jay and Silent Bob strike back. When Ben Affleck delivered the 'worst idea since Greedo shooting first' line I cracked up and everyone turned and looked at me like 'what the hell are you laughing at?

War does not make one great.

I couldn't believe how Dom kept going on with it... even after it was obvious nobody in the friggin room had ANY idea whatsoever what he was talking about. He really went into "geek mode"... you could tell it was just something he was really passionate about. I kept picturing him drunk at some high-rolling celebrity party trying to make other celebs see the folly of 'Greedo shooting first'.

"Heey... Vigo... man, it was great werkin wi you on Lord on my Rings. Hey... you ever see star warzz? See, cuz now Greedo shoots first? Can you beleve it, Vigo? That totally takes away from the badassedness of Han, don'cha think? Hiccup! S'cuse me."

Anywho, I thought it was cool, and I liked his use of the word badassedness.

Dude, the exact same thing happened to me...

I busted out laughing while the rest of the theater just sat there.

And here I thought I was the only one. My wife thought I was nuts.

The sad thing is, I don't think the general public understands nor cares when an old movie has been altered. Maybe if director Stanley Donen (who's alive and well) went back and inserted a CGI breakdancing Gene Kelly into "Singin' in the Rain" they would react in horror. Or maybe not...

I wore my "Han Shot First" shirt to the premiere in Daytona and actually had some good-looking geek-ettes try to pick me up because of it. There are plenty of cool people who know how screwed up that change is. Now if only Harrison Ford would weigh in on the issue.

Hopefully, instead of talking about the OT, ol' Harrison is at the gym buffing up for Indy IV.
