What about Fox and the Hound? I have the PAL fullscreen french laserdisc (“Rox et Rouky”); how is it ranked?

Okay, looked into it on Blu-Ray.com and the new Snow White Blu-Ray is basically the same master as the Diamond Edition. Which, given your recommendation of the Diamond Edition as an acceptable alternative DoctorM, seems like a “must-buy” for me. Been wanting Snow White back in my collection of Disney movies for awhile. Had the VHS (really it was a good restoration for its medium, dunno why they decided to continually monkey with it for future releases) and now I’ll probably have the Signature Collection Blu-Ray. Hopefully that stupid DMR-exclusive bonus feature is still there.

EDIT: Would have been nice had I enclosed a link. http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Snow-White-and-the-Seven-Dwarfs-Blu-ray/144704/#Review

Snow White is a problem because there really is no know original version outside of some film prints. Disney ‘restored’ this film early.

Yeah, I am aware of that being an issue, but I am probably going to have to start putting my money where my mouth is in terms of not buying aggressively restored DVDs and Blu-Rays. And while Snow White was one of the first aggressive restorations, this looks to be the best option for now.

I’m not the most well-versed on PAL releases, so I wouldn’t be able to tell you one way or the other. DoctorM or Molly would probably help you out more than I could. I’ve been starting to buy PAL Region 2 Doctor Who DVDs because they’re getting ridiculously expensive here in Region 1 land.

I have a DVD of Sleeping Beauty that appears to be quite old. I’m not sure what it’s sourced from, though. It’s pan-and-scan, and the source looks reasonably grainy and filmlike.

Could someone more knowledgeable than I shed some light on this - and is it worth uploading you-know-where?

Just repeat to yourself “It’s just a film, I should really just relax”

Hey, does anybody out there possibly still have the pre-BD HD version of Mickey’s Christmas Carol saved somewhere? I thought it was on streaming prior to the BD, with the grain intact, but I can’t find a rip of it anywhere…

No… I have my copy still from the Walt Disney Treasures Mickey Mouse in Living Color Volume 2 DVD set… would that count?

No, it wouldn’t. I swear there was an earlier HD transfer, just not on physical media. Am I misremembering or confusing it with Sword in the Stone?

I don’t think there was ever one.
There was just a comparison of a screenshot from the bluray with an untouched grainy screenshot coming from the menu.

Guys, we have a new winner for The Sword in the Stone!

The Amazon WEB-DL is 1080p, has no logo, and fewer artifacts than the best HDTVrips around; better bitrate too.

And, of course… no terrible DNR like the BD.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Excellent!
I don’t know how the color looks on 35mm, but I have my suspicions about both of these transfers. To my eyes there is a lot of hue shifting, resulting in unnatural colors. I looked at some lobby cards to get an idea of what this could have looked like, and came up with a single correction for both images:

And being called “DL” I assume someone has made them available outside of Amazon?

Indeed. Everything I’ve mentioned recently is available on Usenet.

Looks to me like they are using a master that has been ‘restored’.

What do you mean? Detail-wise this looks great, even grainier than a “good” Disney release. Colors are a bit meh, I agree… what is the filesize of this?

Sorry. Looks like i had the web-dl and HDTV mixed. Yeah, that is an improvement.
I do like how the grain is more intact and not blotchy from low bitrate compression.

I’m not home at the moment, but it’s around 8-9 GiB IIRC.

about SITS:
Why on earth they release a very good HD digital version and they also release a really crappy Bluray?
Hope other animation films are on the way like Robin Hood, Aristocats (yes, I know about the HDTV version), 101 Dalmatians etc.

Isn’t this the same as the 2002 DVD, though? Before the '08 remaster the film was still cropped and had a similar color timing to this on home video.

I’ve never found evidence that the 2008 release had any restoration versus the 2001 DVD. The real damage was done for the 2013 release.

The important thing is the AR is still 1.33:1 which suggests pre-2013 restoration which was 1.75:1.
