Idea: EA Battlefront as a source of new footage for fan edits

Due to its photorealistic graphics, I think it’s a valid source for new OT footage. Just make sure not to show any human faces, or anything furry (Chewbacca) to stay away from the Uncanny Valley. That scene of Vader entering Echo Base through the main doors would be a neat addition to TESB, and some footage from Endor would help draw some attention away from the Ewoks and onto the Rebels. Any battle footage could also help show that the Rebels aren’t all humans. Vader landing on Mustafar could be put alongside footage of his tower, if one can see a reason for it. I think there’s loads of potential.

Could you link to the Vader scene?

I have used captured footage of Star Destroyers overhead in my TFA fan-edit (replacing the Starkiller blowing up planets than Finn and Han are looking up at). Works well for a lot of subtle ship/space/landscape stuff - the faces on a lot of the human characters are a bit off though imo.

But they’d be Imperial Star Destroyers instead of First Order ones. Is it too far away to tell?

I think so. How do you post a screengrab here??

I think the idea is interesting, but in execution I don’t see how you could integrate any of the video game footage into any of the films without the switch being incredibly jarring.

Now if someone could get into the game engine and extract the models they built using scans of the physical models and figure out how to adapt them into a movie 3D rendering program, that’s a different story.

If someone is willing to get me a ship and a shrink ray, I’ll inject myself into the game engine.

That’s been done already:

(I didn’t read through these threads but I’ve seen Battlefront models floating around the net so they must have been successful^^)

What makes you say that?

The difference between film quality CGI/models and video game CGI is still rather large. Say nothing of the live action people and environments to CGI.

The new Battlefront II may also be a very good source of footage, and it can apply to all the movies since the game will span all eras.

The movies already have plenty of CGI (the more recent, the more CGI), and it looks fine. As long as you’re not using CGI humans, but even then, Leia looked perfect in RO.

I don’t know what it is, but it’s very obvious that the footage is from a video game. I’m going with lighting, for the Vader scene linked earlier in the thread, but for other scenes, faces and motion too.

Have you guys been keeping up on the new Battlefront II stuff out of E3? I think there’s a definite possibility of using footage from the game in an edit. I agree that it probably won’t work to use footage of Heroes, but maybe the footage can be used to spice up battle sequences, particularly in the prequels. The droids and clones in the movies are already CG, and worse CG than the game IMO.

I think Tarkin looked better than Leia. She was just a little off when it came to some of her facial movements, that’s because it wasn’t really her. When she smiled, you could tell something was off. They did a great job though. I know it’s really hard work, lots of hours and days went into getting it to that point.

As far as the topic, no, you shouldn’t add game footage to any films. It doesn’t look right in my opinion.
