The DC Extended Universe

I didn’t find a thread for the DC movies so here goes.

I hadn’t liked any DC movie since The Dark Knight. I almost walked out from Man of Steel and I didn’t even go to see BvS until home video. It had a couple of great moments and I really liked Affleck as Batman which was a surprise for me. And of course it was great to see Wonder Woman for the first time which made me hopeful to see her movie.

Having seen it last week it has stuck on my mind since. To me it’s probably one of my favorite movies in the last 10 years. I don’t remember having so much fun and at the same time deeper thoughts about the humanity and everything she inspires us to be. Everybody who has seen it has enjoyed it immensely. It’s a really great movie and I’m waiting more for its BD release than the last two SW movies which feels a little weird but hey.

Anyways, cautiously looking forward for the Justice League movie, not sure about that. I hate universe building movies where you need to cram everything in it which is why it was so enjoyable to just watch her story in WW. Really looking forward for the possible WW2 and hopefully they get Patty Jenkins to direct it. Would be great if she’d direct some other DC films, at least Superman really needs to come out to the sunlight and become what he’s supposed to be and Jenkins seems to get it.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

I haven’t seen Wonder Woman yet, but I’ve pretty much despised every single DCEU film so far. What’s even worse is that so many “edgy” kids at my school like to boast about how good Suicide Squad is.

Not enough people read the EU.

Suicide Squad is the first movie I’ve ever considered walking out on. Not only was it terrible; but it was embarrassing to watch.

Not Rises?

I never saw The Dark Knight but Dark Knight Rises was a terrible, terrible piece of trash.

Wonder Woman was in a different league–much better movie.

I have been up and down on the DC universe quite a bit. Thought Wonder Woman was FINE but not nearly as good as Guardians of the Galaxy 2. My ranking of the DCEU is as follows:

  1. Man of Steel (Very unpopular opinion but I absolutely adore this movie)
  2. Wonder Woman (Pretty good flick that I left the theatre being quite satisfied with)

…6 feet of shit…

  1. BvS/Suicide Squad (awful narrative structure, no coherent message, just awful. But they each had ONE good thing. BvS had batfleck and SS had Will Smith doing his thing)

Return of the Jedi: Remastered

Lord of the Rings: The Darth Rush Definitives

I’ve seen Man of Steel in the cinema. This was the only movie in the last maybe 15 years I was seriously considering walking out and punching somebody while leaving. I absolutely hated MoS and everything it represented.

Batman v. Superman - I’ve seen the trailer and thought this looks like a giant piece of shit. So I refused to pay for watching it. However some time ago one of our TV stations bought it and promoted it like it’s the best thing ever. So I gave it a fair chance - I watched it until the first commercial break, then I switched the channel and never came back.

Suicide Squad - I’ve seen the trailer and thought this looks like a giant piece of shit. Just like BvS. And just like BvS I refused to pay to see it. So if I will be able to watch it for free one day, I might try it, otherwise I’m skipping this one.

Wonder Woman - haven’t seen it yet. I originally thought I’ll skip this one, mainly because of the feminist propaganda surrounding it, but people who have similar taste to mine seem to like it and the most negative review I’ve seen was that it’s OK for a superhero movie, so I probably will try it once it’s out on home video (I missed all the theatrical showings)

Please elaborate.

Well ALL of the mainstream media promote her as a new feminist icon (despite her being created as a sexual fantasy of an old pervert), promoting the movie as the first female led superhero movie (which is a lie), promote it as an “female empowerment” movie (which from what I heard / read so far is also a lie), there are these illegal women-only screening… Just google “wonder woman feminism”, you’ll find tons of articles. On the other hand there were people who also claim to be feminists and they were outraged that Gal Gadot has shaved armpits…

I hate entertainment mixed with politics, unless it’s done subtly (like e.g. classic Star Trek)

Still, at what point would the movie itself be “propaganda”? Is it already just for being about a strong woman, or would she have to go on a pro-abortion crusade or something?

Also, I don’t know why the women-only screenings are a problem. I don’t think anyone would have complained about the screenings had they been called “girl’s night out” or something.

I loved Wonder Woman btw, after hating DC’s movie universe prior. It felt feminist by nature of having strong women, but not “propaganda”.

Hahahahaha. It sure is hard being a man in today’s world!

Also, nothing you complained about is the movie’s fault.

Rises didn’t feel like Batman. It had some good moments but at that point it got way too Nolan-y. It also has ridicilous plot holes and it didn’t bring anything new to the trilogy. I’ve only seen it 2 times compared to TDK which I’ve seen more than a dozen times.

Forgot about Suicide Squad. I didn’t even bother with it after first reviews came in.

Also, I don’t get how WW could be some kind of propaganda. To me that was one of the rare times the situation actually works. How can you avoid being labeled “feminist” if the movie is about a goddess who was brought up by Amazons? If she was a man and all the women were men, it wouldn’t be a problem then? Ugh. I do dislike the recent trend in recent movies with female action leads when you can feel it doesn’t work well. Even though I like Rogue One, you could replace Jyn with a guy and it wouldn’t matter one bit. That I hate. Wonder Woman is strong and smart and everything you’d wish her to be while still being all woman. If the movie was directed by a guy, I’m pretty sure it would’ve not work in these days.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

The origin story for Wonder Woman the film and the golden age comic are very similar, so IMHO, good storytelling took precedence over any percieved propaganda, regardless of how it was spun or who tried the spinning. Similar outcries were heard when people complained that Luke Cage was “too ethnic”…but that is who Cage is and that is the world he lives in. Just like WW and her hot Amazonian sisters in this case, and sweet Christms was this film a good one.

Ok, so of the eight crazy things I thought you said, you actually only said seven of them.

Also, that lawyer has made a terrible comparison with his gay bar because The Alamo is not shutting out men from every screening, just a few. A man who wants to see the movie at the Alamo still has every opportunity to do so.

Is it a Civil Rights Violation to ban men from a WONDER WOMAN screening?

Nope.

I guess I don’t even need to watch the video.

Fine, here you have the same document from the nyc.gov website
http://www1.nyc.gov/site/cchr/law/in-public-spaces.page

It is against the City Human Rights Law for a public accommodation to withhold or refuse to provide full and equal enjoyment of those goods or services based on the following protected classes under the Law:

i don’t understand why anyone could have a reasonable complaint against one or two women-only screenings…

I mean, really? present an argument that is something more than whining, i can’t think of any.
