Read Dark Jedi’s posts on page 173 and maybe some after that page. It’s been five months since the announcement. A Christmas surprise would be nice.

First, I commend your work. The despecialized editions are a fantastic version of the trilogy.
I’ve been checking this place out since I decided I couldn’t deal with the post-97 changes. I got into Star Wars with the 97 SE trilogy and prefer to watch that version of the films, bad CG and all. I naturally started by trying to find copies online, since I don’t watch anything on disc. And I joined the few who were bummed to learn that they never even made it onto DVD.
So I went ahead and bought the NTSC laserdisc collection and a laserdisc player. I captured local copies of the movies and all’s well. These are standard def, letterboxed, 640x480 copies. I even kept the laserdisc operation prompts and side flips to make it a true laserdisc experience. It looks rough but this is all about nostalgia for me anyway. Nothing more nostalgic than CRT-quality Star Wars movies.
My question is what’s the best way to contribute these to your efforts, or if it’s even necessary?

Most projects are uploaded either to alt.binaries.starwars on usenet, as a torrent on Myspleen.org, or using links to various file-locker sites on tehparadox.com.
The truth is that althor1138 has posted 720p upscaled versions of all the 97se laserdiscs which are at or near the best the medium can look. However, he has not included the side changes, etc. the way you have, so it might interest some folks out there.

I think for most people, myself included, Myspleen is the best solution.

The one thing I will give George is that he is a packrat/horder. He doesn’t get rid of anything. I doubt that those interprositives have gone anywhere. They would be a decent source for a OUT restoration with very little cost. And from what I’ve seen in comparing the BR to the GOUT, yes the original negative was cut, but everything cut out could be scanned and reassembled. The original negative should be easy to recreate. For ANH this is especially true because they went to the expense and effort to make a 3 color separation master. They did not strike anything from it and by the time they needed it, in the early 90’s when they realized the original negative had faded badly, the three strips of film had shrunk at different rates and there was not way at the time to restore it. Today that is a simple digital procedure and it would take very little effort to scan those, align them, and clean them up for a full restoration of the original theatrical version. Assuming George has kept everything like he usually does.

I don’t think we are “definitely dead” but I still do not have a useable PC to do any projects, I need a rebuild to keep doing these projects, my water cooler went out and messed a lot of shit up before I could catch it, but I do have the lossless avi files on my PC for ESB and ROTJ 97 SE, so who knows?
FWIW, I would love to see these SE versions completed. Seeing this project out would be awesome.

This thread appears to be upscaling the GOUT and 97 SE broadcasts. I doubt I have his skill, but I am attempting the same thing. For me it is more about the colors. I’m attempting to restore something close to the original colors for both versions. It is the first stage in restoring the colors to the Blu-Ray. For A New Hope that will be hard. But one thing I have found is that my efforts to enhance it look best at 720p and do not downgrade well to 480p Widescreen DVD resolution. I think I have the colors for the GOUT and am very close for the SE. Along with the SE, I’m including the broadcasts of The Phantom Menace and reconstructions of the theatrical version of AOTC and ROTS (using the extant theatrical camera print for AOTC and the Blu-ray of ROTS to correct the DVD versions) and using the cinema DTS disc audio for all but ROTS (where the DVD audio is the same as the theatrical). Plus I’ve found information that has led to me creating a slightly enhanced GOUT of the original 77 theatrical version of Star Wars (the no episode number opening crawl, 3 different effects shots, and different end credits). So I’m going to have 10 files in the end.

You can also use the cinema DTS disc for Revenge of the Sith since DTS is of a higher bitrate than Dolby Digital.
Also, make sure to convert it to DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1 Matrix and not regular DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 since it’s presented in cinemas in DTS-ES 6.1 which is matrixed 5.1.

I’ve never seen any indication that DTS 6.1 existed in a theatrical setting. ROTS was presented in Dolby Digital EX, which is a matrixed form of 6.1, but there’s no indication that the DTS mix was done with this in mind. In my opinion, the better choice would be to prepare the DTS mix in 5.1 and then just use your receiver to upmix it to 6.1. The end result would be the same anyway.

And from what we’ve seen with the Star Wars stereo track from 1977, if they matrixed something they never bothered to make a non-matrix mix so the DVD should have that same matrixed soundtrack. There is not “just stereo” mix of the OT. All the stereo soundtracks are matrixed with either 4 or 5 channels.
Yeah even my old pre faces vhs tapes have great* surround.
*great as in the pro logic gives the surround effect wonderfully, not overall sound quality.
The LD’s are where you find the good sound.
